Old Wrinkly: "There are those that say the Vegetable-That-No-One-Dares-Name can be found in a great country to the west known as America ..."
Hiccup: "But most people say, that there's no such place as America. Most people say that it's an imaginary land that only crack pot weirdos believe in. Most people think that the earth is as flat as a pancake, and if you sail too far to the west you will fall off the end of it."
  — Book 4

America is a land west of the Barbaric Archipelago, across the Great West Ocean.

Official Description[]

A place that only 'crackpot weirdos' believe in. There is always a question as to whether or not the Vikings really did discover America
  — Official Description

Geography[]

According to Viking maps, America is located across the Great West Ocean, on the other side of the world from the Barbaric Archipelago. America is also so far from the Archipelago, that no one could swim the distance.

America is inhabited by the "Feather People", so named by Bigjob.

This was a glorious country, full of natural Treasures like the Vegetable-That-No-One-Dares-Name, and friendly natives that Bigjob called 'Feather People'. Bigjob spent a happy couple of months there before returning home to the Inner Isles.

How to Cheat a Dragon's Curse[]

As told in Book 4, America earned a reputation in the Barbaric Archipelago as a place that only the insane thought existed, due to the fact that it was supposedly on the other side of the world, which was thought by Vikings to be "flat as a pancake."

A Hysteric Tribe tale told by Old Wrinkly speaks of the father of Norbert the Nutjob, Bigjob, sailed to America in his ship The American Dream. Bigjob landed and was welcomed by the Feather People, of whom he interacted with. Bigjob also obtained a potato, a legendary vegetable with supposed magical properties, that no one in back home in the Archipelago would even dare name. Bigjob returned home to Hysteria with stories of America as well as the potato. However, on his voyage home, Bigjob was followed by a Doomfang. Bigjob became the first and only Viking to visit America.

Events then transpired in How to Cheat a Dragon's Curse, in which Norbert the Nutjob met Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III who went to Hysteria to steal Bigjob's potato to cure Fishlegs of Vorpentitis. The quest was successful to some extent and the potato was grown on Berk, though Bigjob's corpse was fed to the Squealers accidentally.

How to Ride a Dragon's Storm[]

Norbert then decided to start his own voyage to America in his ship named after his father's, The American Dream 2. Norbert planned to conquer America and name it Nutjob-land, so he brought many supplies and weapons along on the ship.

He arranges to have Hiccup kidnapped, and sails away from the Archipelago with him. The American Dream 2 is destroyed just before reaching the shores of America by a vindictive Leviathorgan.

How to Break a Dragon's Heart[]

As told in How to Break a Dragon's Heart, around a hundred years before the childhood of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, the Kingdom of the Wilderwest fell after a sequence of events triggered by the King, Grimbeard the Ghastly murdering his own son, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock II. Grimbeard, distraught, mourned at the island later aptly named Grimbeard's Despair, then sailed into the west on his ship The Endless Journey. Legends told that Grimbeard reached America and lived the rest of his days with the Feather People.
