Astrid Hofferson is a female Viking warrior of Clan Hofferson of the Hooligan tribe. She's smart, striking, extremely beautiful, and her determined and strong personality makes her hard to impress. Astrid is 15 years old in "How to Train Your Dragon", "Dragons: Riders of Berk" and "Dragons: Defenders of Berk", 18-19 in "Dawn of the Dragon Racers" and "Dragons: Race to the Edge", and 20 in the sequel. In spite of her initial fall outs with Hiccup and disdain toward dragons, Astrid ends up becoming his lifelong confidante, thanks to Toothless, and quickly adapts to a life with dragons.

Astrid is Hiccup's love interest in the first movie, Riders and Defenders of Berk, and the first three seasons of Race to the Edge, she becomes his girlfriend in the Dragons: Race to the Edge episode "Blindsided", and they are betrothed by episode "Sandbusted".

Official Description

"Astrid, 20, is the self-assured, competitive champion of the Dragon Races and Hiccup's longtime girlfriend. Beautiful despite herself, she's tough and rational, providing Hiccup with a blunt voice of reason while remaining his most outspoken supporter.

A strong sense of duty defines Astrid to the core. She will always do what must be done without regard for herself. So when trouble threatens the people and dragons that she loves, Astrid stops at nothing to defend them, even if though that means going rogue and defying Stoick's orders. "

Physical Appearance

Astrid is petite for a Viking, but is given the advantage of agility because of this in Dragon Training. She has long, blonde hair wrapped in a braid down her back, bangs that initially cover the left side of her face, and a metal-studded, leather band across her forehead. In the first movie, Astrid wears a striped steel-blue sleeveless shirt, tan cloth bracers on her arms (each bit of cloth goes between her first and second finger) with arm wrappings above them, a red skirt with spikes surrounding it and another black skirt underneath the spiked one, and dark blue leggings. She also wears a belt decorated with silver skulls with a pouch tied to it and shoulder pads. Her weapon of choice is a double-edged battle axe, which might previously have belonged to her mother.[2]

In "Dawn of the Dragon Racers" and Dragons: Race to the Edge, Astrid's wears a tight blue shirt and her top red skirt has less spikes on it, and her black skirt underneath is replaced with a red skirt. She still wears the same shoulder guards (this time, with a red leather holster strap holding them in place) and arm wrappings but now has red leather kneepads on her leggings. Her hair is still kept in a French braid but her bangs have been cut off in length, no longer covering half her face, and comes with a side braid behind her ear. Astrid has also stopped wearing kohl around her eyes.

In "How to Train Your Dragon 2", Astrid's appearance is more elegant and feminine. She now wears a red sleeveless shirt with a dark spiked skirt that matches her boots. Her hair is more sun-bleached and neatly styled in a lengthy side-braid draped over left her shoulder. Astrid also wears a fur hoodie, usually cloaked over her back and shoulders along with metallic shoulder pads and a matching silver belt decorated with small skulls. Her usual arm-wrappings are, however, replaced with large, thick bracers covered in fur. Astrid still carries an axe but it's considerably different in design than her previous ones. It's very likely Hiccup has made her a new axe.

Astrid's overall look throughout the franchise is heavily inspired by her dragon Stormfly. All of her skirts are covered in spikes similar in shape to Stormfly's spines. The tan spines also match Astrid's blonde hair and arm wraps. Stormfly's complexion is primarily blue with some specks of red, quite similar to the colors of Astrid's outfits.

Personality

"You know exactly who you are. You always have. "
―Hiccup[src]

Astrid is dutiful and immensely devoted to her cause. She used to be patriotic of the Viking way until dragons became an integral part of Berk. Competitive by nature and highly dedicated, Astrid works hard to achieve her goals. In "How to Train Your Dragon", she pushed herself to become a better fighter. After bonding closely with Stormfly, Astrid’s focus shifted to becoming a masterful dragon rider. In the sequel, she is the champion of the Dragon Races.

Astrid is emotionally driven, and as a warrior, sworn to protect those she holds dear. In "Team Astrid" she blamed herself for Dagur’s attack on Berk despite being fully aware she couldn't have done anything to prevent it. Her guilt and responsibility toward her family probed her to take immediate actions. In "Fright of Passage", Astrid’s innate pride and sense of duty drove her to face the Flightmare on her own, without any regard to herself. Even as an adult, Astrid is willing to go rogue and defy direct orders to ensure the safety of her loved ones.

Though lessened with maturity, she can be short-tempered and somewhat of a perfectionist at times, especially true before the integration of dragons. Further exacerbated by her emotional personality, this can lead her to act impulsive and irrational. In the first movie, Astrid was solely focused on training and the war, often isolating herself and ignoring the other teens. When Hiccup began surpassing her, she grew visibly upset over his sudden improvements. Fueled by jealousy and suspicion, she started to follow him discreetly, eventually leading her to interrogate him in the cove.

Concept Art of Astrid

Astrid grew more even and level-headed upon entering adulthood, though is still shown to be quite fiery under intense circumstances. On "Race to the Edge", she exhibited vulnerability, gentleness and was much less prone to violence; preferring capture-missions over kill-missions. She had also become more openly talkative and closer to her fellow riders. Astrid could still come across as a little prideful and dismissive at times as pointed out by Ruffnut, but she was also able to own up to her mistakes, yet again demonstrating a never-ending will to improve herself. In the following episode, "Shock and Awe", Astrid pulled a prank on the twins as payback for 'Loki’s Day', showing significant growth in her playful side.

She has also proven to be greatly reliable and is Hiccup's most loyal supporter. Her methods of encouragement varies but she rarely outright give him the answer to his problems. Instead, she boosts up his confidence and stands by him as he walks through the solution at his own pace. Her supportive nature also extends well beyond Hiccup. She has often shown compassion to the rest of her peers, and has especially let Heather confide in her on numerous occasions. Although her loyalties are steadfast, in "Snow Way Out" Astrid had to hold back information from Hiccup at Heather's request. She struggled deeply with guilt over it as she had never lied to him before.

In "The Longest Day", due to overtiredness, Astrid suffered from uncontrollable euphoria. She became overly chipper and peppy, almost to the point of insanity, which is the opposite of the way she usually behaves.

By the time of "How to Train Your Dragon 2", Astrid has adopted an optimistic and relaxed outlook on life. Although slightly cheeky and overconfident at times, she is more emotionally secure because of her steady relationship with Hiccup. Her sense of adventure and exploring is also apparent, but her ongoing competitiveness and rigid approach to grave situations remains. As an adult, she is generally more spirited and playful, and loves to goof around with Hiccup, Stormfly and Toothless.

Abilities, Skills and Talents

As a promising warrior and second-in-command, Astrid carries an array of skills and talents.

Strength and Fighting: Astrid has been training since she was a child. She's an exceptionally skilled warrior which has been proven several times throughout both the film and the series. She has held her own against older and more experienced fighters. In "Night of the Hunters, Part 2", she was also able to fight Dragon Hunters with nothing but a broom. She's presumably the most accomplished fighter among the teens, if not along with Snotlout. Her main weapon of choice is a double-sided axe and she is quite formidable with it. She can also alternate between knives, swords and temporary makeshift weapons. Despite her slender form and small size, she has also shown to have great strength to lift heavy objects and is able to hold her own against a wild dragon. She can even grab Snotlout by the arm and throw him into a wall.

Dragon Riding and Training: Next to Hiccup, she's the most accomplished Rider among the teens. She works very well with Stormfly and they're usually able to synchronize their moves accurately. In "Heather Report, Part 2", while on Outcast Island, Astrid was able to tame a wild Monstrous Nightmare and the dragon later ended up coming to her rescue, which showed that Astrid had gained its loyalty. She rode off on the tame Nightmare and has also ridden on Hookfang. When she had learned the dragon call of the Deadly Nadder, Astrid was able to train a flock of Nadders to fly in a perfect formation. In "A Tale of Two Dragons", when she temporarily became Hookfang's Rider, she figured out the hidden ability of 'Wing Blast'. After being blinded in "Blindsided", Astrid emphasised on her other senses and was able to train Sleuther, a former untamable Triple Stryke.

Speed and Acrobatics: These are undoubtedly her top physical skills. She's able to perform a variety of acrobatic feats like handsprings, cartwheels and flips even while riding Stormfly. In "The Night and the Fury", she was also able to swiftly dodge the attacks of a wild Deadly Nadder, and likewise with the Flightmare in "Fright of Passage".

Reflexes: Astrid is able to react very quickly to incoming danger. In "Defenders of the Wing, Part 1", she dodged an arrow by kicking it away with her foot and was able to grab the darts fired at her and Hiccup with her bare hands. She is also seen to be able to divert and slice arrows away from her by swinging her axe.

Intelligence and Tactical Knowledge: Even though Hiccup stands for most of the strategies and solutions to their problems with Fishlegs providing most of the knowledge, Astrid has proven to be quite valuable and capable in this department as well. She was the only one who wasn't fooled by Heather's act and was the one to come up with the idea of getting the Book of Dragons back from Outcast Island. She has also always given plenty useful advice to Hiccup throughout the years and he always takes them to heart. When Hiccup was captured by the Dragon Hunters in Stryke Out, Astrid tricked one of the hunters into sending an air mail so she and the other Riders could shadow the Terror and thus figure out Hiccup's whereabouts. Astrid's plans and ideas are often driven by her tactical knowledge on defense and warfare, and are usually of the practical and strategic sense.

Crafting: Astrid built and designed her own hut as well as a ballista on top of her hut, displaying a few weapon making skills as well. According to Snotlout her ballista is impossible to get past and has shown to be able to take down whole ships. In Have Dragon Will Travel, Part 1 Astrid spoke of wanting to build herself an axe similar to Heather's, which suggests she probably has had a bit experience working in the forge.

Leadership: Astrid is Hiccup's second in command and his first and natural choice for Acting-Chief. She often falls into a leading role in his absence and has displayed a great eagerness to take on control and keep the other riders in check. In the aftermath of the events of The Serpent's Heir, Astrid is promoted to General of Berk. She and Hiccup will lead Berk as a pair by working together as Chief and General.

Dragon Calling: In "We Are Family, Part 1", Astrid learned to call Stormfly and other Deadly Nadders by using a wolf-like howl.

Acting: Astrid dressed up as Heather, even wearing a horn identical to Heather's, to sneak into Outcasts Island. She manage to fool everyone there until Alvin the Treacherous figured out she was only wearing a disguise after realizing her hair had been painted black with ink. She also managed to somewhat imitate Hiccup's voice for her own amusement.

Teaching: Astrid is shown to be a strict teacher in "Team Astrid" when she attempted to train a new set of Dragons Riders to be a part of her auxiliary team. She put them under high pressure and held them to unrealistically high expectations even if they had some prior experience. Astrid also trained Dagur in Family on the Edge. She was less harsh this time around, and complimented him on his skills as well as the way he had bonded with his dragon. Astrid advised him to use loops to keep the sun behind him for distraction and Dagur later ended up using this tactic against Heather.

Drawing: In "Imperfect Harmony" Astrid sketched her own version of the outpost. Her initial style was shown to be very simplistic. By the time of "Edge of Disaster, Part 1", Astrid's artistic skills have improved. Instead of flat or two-dimensional, the sketch of her planned attack against the hunters was shown to have more depth and touches of realism. Astrid is also seen doodling on Hiccup's map of the world in How to Train Your Dragon 2. According to director Dean DeBlois, Astrid has contributed just as much to that map as Hiccup has.[3] In No Dragon Left Behind Ruffnut notes that Astrid has great artistic skills after seeing her drawing of Stormfly and Garff.

Juggling and Dancing: In "The Longest Day" Astrid was shown ballet dancing and juggling three large maces while balancing on one foot. Both of these skills require time and practice.

Enhanced Hearing: When she was blinded, her hearing became more sensitive to compensate. This made her the only rider to be able to hear the Triple Strike's clicks and foresee an impending attack. It is unknown if she retains this ability after her sight returned.

Relationships

Kiss1

First kiss with Hiccup

At first, Astrid is shown to be disinterested in romance - due to her sole focus on improving her fighting skills. However, whilst the other Vikings actively ridicule Hiccup, Astrid seems more weary of him, only becoming angry with him due to his inability to focus in the Arena. Her dislike for him grows into jealously when he becomes more skilled at "fighting" dragons than she is. Despite the initial problems in their relationship, Astrid later grows to where Hiccup becomes her main love interest as she kisses him twice (albeit after punching him on the arm both times). Beyond the romantic elements of their relationship, Astrid and Hiccup are the closest human friends that either has.

In the "Riders of Berk" series they appear to have a budding relationship, but they are quite shy and awkward about it. Their romantic attachment is more suggested in their dynamic and interaction then out rightly stated. Whilst Astrid maintains more of her initial stern, authoritative demeanor with the other Vikings, she opens up more when alone with Hiccup, and apparently feels safe showing a considerably softer, more whimsical side of her personality to him. The two are incredibly close, with Astrid acting as Hiccup's confidant when he needs advice on personal problems, and often pair off from the others when needing to achieve something especially difficult.

Astrid's feelings for Hiccup usually manifest themselves as extreme devotion and protectiveness, as she is always the first to aid him in any situation and the last to leave him, which Hiccup reciprocates towards Astrid. It appears to be an unspoken assumption that Astrid will accompany Hiccup on his adventures, more so then the other Vikings, and will usually invite herself along regardless. On the rare occasions that they are separated by mitigating circumstances, she is shown to worry greatly about him and is always overjoyed to be reunited with him. In "When Lightning Strikes", Astrid is the first person that Hiccup seeks out before leaving the island because of the lightning, and when Hiccup tells Astrid that he is leaving with Toothless the first thing that she asks if he will come back. Despite his assurance that he will return when the villagers all realize that the lightning wasn't because of Toothless, Astrid appears sad and distraught. In "Frozen", she hugged Hiccup in front of Gobber when he returned from rescuing Johann and in "The Eel Effect", she was willing to wait outside in the cold while she was suffering from Eel Pox for Hiccup to come back and was very happy to see him returned. These actions suggest that her crush on him is getting harder to hide.

The kiss

Astrid kissing Hiccup

It is possible that Astrid had feelings for Hiccup before the events in the movie, due to her immediate change in behavior during the first flight. She might have just ignored this since Hiccup didn't meet the usual Viking standards. When Hiccup was thought to be dead after he defeated the Red Death, Astrid, besides Stoick, is the only Viking to be brought to tears, meaning she took it the hardest. In "Thawfest", she did say that one thing she "always liked about Hiccup" is that he was a gracious loser, further supporting this theory. She is also in a sense Hiccup's moral guide, keeping him honest.

In "Gift of the Night Fury", Astrid remains a close friend of Hiccup, as Astrid and Hiccup both advocate the idea to make up new holiday traditions to cheer the tribe up, and they discuss the prosthetic Hiccup makes for Toothless so the Night Fury can fly on his own. It's never officially confirmed if they've become a couple. Even so, Astrid comforts Hiccup when he's missing Toothless, and even kisses him on the lips and hugs him. However, she still likes to tease Hiccup, as she did with him when she noticed Toothless had entered the Great Hall, before she giddily turned him around so he could see Toothless was back.

Dragonsedge4

By the time of the episode Blindsided Hiccup and Astrid are a couple. Before the events of the episode they seemed to have a strong relationship. In "When Darkness Falls", when they first land on Dragon's Edge and Hiccup takes charge of having them set up the camp Snotlout complains about liking "whiny Berk Hiccup" more than "Princess outpost Hiccup" to which Astrid replies, "I know, right?" before giving Hiccup a secret double thumbs up. Then the next day when everyone is pushing their ideas for the outpost Astrid smiles when Hiccup states that they need one idea, as if she fully expects Hiccup to choose her design and then gets upset when Hiccup states that everyone else's ideas are good. However, what is perhaps the most telling is the layout that Hiccup chooses for Dragon's Edge. Hiccup placed his hut right next to Astrid's hut and they are closer together than any of the other huts.

Astrid having put her right hand on Hiccup's shoulder

In "Have Dragon Will Travel, Part 2", Heather asks Astrid if she and Hiccup are a couple. First, Astrid panics and throws her axe into the top of a tree. Then she adamantly states the two are just friends, though appears a little nervous on the matter, and it is clear that Heather doesn't buy her denials. Also, when Heather states that Hiccup is kind of cute Astrid smiles and says, "I guess. If you like that unassuming, heroic, dragon rider type." Then at the end, Hiccup feels sorry for Astrid losing a friend, knowing the two got really close. Astrid then puts her arm around Hiccup and states, "But I still have you".

In "Night of the Hunters, Part 1", when Stormfly gets captured, leaving Astrid stranded in the water, she doesn't show up back to campsite after sunset, and a concerned Hiccup along with the rest of the dragon riders go out to look for her. Hiccup finds her just as she begins to lose consciousness and sinks into the ocean. He manages to save her, and frantically calls her name until she responds. A relieved Hiccup then embraces her, thanking Thor that she's alright. She passes out again, and he holds her close as they fly back to the Edge in the rain.

In "Snow Way Out", Astrid was very uncomfortable about keeping the secret about Heather from Hiccup, as she had never lied to him before. When he did find out, he was hurt that Astrid kept this information from him, but quickly forgives her.

In "Buffalord Soldier", when Astrid had the deadly illness called the Scourge of Odin, Hiccup is greatly worried for her. He is the first to catch her when she faints and falls off of Stormfly, and holds her hand several times to comfort her. He even says, "I can't imagine a world without you in it." Later in the episode she said to him "I can't imagine a world without you in it either." This is the closest  that they've come to saying that they love each other.

In "Stryke Out", when Snotlout accidentally gets Hiccup and Toothless captured and taken to dragon fights, Astrid was very worried and when they found him she ran to him and hugged him. While they were flying out she said she was glad to have him back and admits that she was worried, Fishlegs said that Astrid would of killed Snotlout if they had not found Hiccup this means she cares very deeply for Hiccup.

In "Last Auction Heroes" when they were captured Astrid placed her hand on Hiccup's shoulder and Hiccup put his hand on hers and they stare into each others eyes.

Hiccup and Astrid Kissing Blindsided

In "Blindsided" when Astrid goes blind due to a lighting bolt Hiccup can only do what he does best at comforting her. She asks Hiccup if he can stay with her and he immediately agrees. The next day with all their dragons except Toothless gone, Astrid tries to go with Hiccup to find Stormfly, but he refuses due to her condition and puts his foot down, but she ends up going. She almost falls off Toothless, but Hiccup catches her, and tells her to hang on tight and claims he's happy she's with him, and she hugs him from behind. Once they land Astrid who is eager to find Stormfly trips, and Hiccup lands on top of her. He gets nervous and stutters leaving them in an awkward situation. But Astrid says she's fine and they both get up. Soon they are faced to face with a Triple Stryke and Astrid is very eager to fight it, but Hiccup wants her to hide, and claims he can't fight it if all he does is keep worrying about her. She agrees to hide, but isn't happy about it. Soon after the Triple Stryke disappears Astrid then starts to worry that her blindness will be permanent, and Hiccup claims if that's the case they'll deal with it together, claiming they've been through everything together, and states, "There'll always be a Hiccup and Astrid. Always." He then leans in for a kiss, but before he can the Triple Stryke returns. She soon gains the Triple Stryke's trust despite being blind. They bring it back to Berk to be trained. Back at the Edge, Gothi returns Astrid's sight. Astrid sees Hiccup again and they hug. Towards the end of the episode they're seen sitting on the landing pad of the edge together. Astrid asks Hiccup if he tried to kiss her in the forest, and he admits he did and she questions why he didn't follow through with it. He claimed it wasn't perfect, and that he's thought about kissing her a lot, but just wanted it to be the perfect moment. Looking at the sunset Astrid claims it to be pretty perfect to her, and Hiccup agrees and the two kiss. They then continue to look at the sunset and they become a couple.

In "Shell Shocked, Part 1" Astrid is very proud of Hiccup of coming up with a plan, and he claims that some ideas were hers and he couldn't have done it with her, and she states, "We make quite the team." Hiccup agrees. He then starts to have doubts about the plan on if it'll work or not and Astrid reassures him it will, and they almost kiss, but they get interpreted by Fishlegs who claims their discussing on where to find the Dragon eye. Both are relieved, due to the fact that their keeping their relationship a secret. Hiccup then states, "Why do we care if they know about us?" Astrid then claims that they both shouldn't care, but she wants to just spend it with hiccup, and claims they'll tell everyone when the time is right. Thus Hiccup offers a handshake, but instead Astrid kisses him, and states, "Did you seriously think I'd leave here with just a handshake?" Later on during war against the Shellfire Astrid starts to get all worried about Hiccup and Hiccup states that have to keep their relationship out of war, so that the others don't find out about their relationship. Later they both apologize about it, and Hiccup's happy Astrid cares, and the two almost kiss again, but are again interrupted, this time by the Twins, who also are oblivious to their romance.

Hiccup and Astrid kissing Shell Fire, Part 2

In Shell Shocked, Part 2 Hiccup and Astrid have a small disagreement about trusting Viggo. Later when Hiccup and Viggo leave to find the Shellfire, Viggo tries to get inside Hiccup's head and taunts him about being in love with his partner in battle. Hiccup tells him to stay out of his personal life . Viggo then pulls out a knife and Astrid arrives just in time to see him about to attack Hiccup. Viggo withdraws his weapon after becoming alert of her presence and claims he was only intending to lure the Submaripper out. Realizing that Viggo is slowing them down, Hiccup drops him off on land which turns out to be mistake as Viggo ends up taking Astrid as hostage. He meets Hiccup by the Edge's volcano and asks him to return the Dragon Eye to him in exchange for a future with Astrid. Hiccup doesn't hesitate and throws the Dragon Eye in Viggo's direction and straight into the volcano. Afterwards, Astrid apologizes to Hiccup for not have listened to him, and states, "You are our leader. Our relationship can't get in the way of that. It won't happen again." Hiccup then tells her not to hold back on her feelings. He relies on her and that's what makes them a team. Astrid agrees and pulls him into a kiss which he returns. This affectionate gesture ends up being witnessed by the rest of the riders who appear to be happy for the couple. Hiccup and Astrid end up leaving on their dragons with their hands intertwined.

Hiccup and Astrid hugging 2 - season 5

Hiccup presents a betrothal gift to Astrid in Sandbusted. As he gives it to her he reveals; "This was my father's betrothal gift to my mother, and he gave it to me to give to you. Astrid you're a part of our family, you always have been, and I hope you always will be." Astrid ends up sighing which Hiccup misinterprets as dislike for the gift and he starts to backtrack until Astrid reassures him that she actually loves the gift and is only disappointed she couldn't get him anything in return. Hiccup interrupts her then and tells her she is the greatest gift to him in the world and the only gift he needs. Hiccup then pulls her into loving hug. By this time the two of them have been officially betrothed for six moon cycles.

Astrid and Hiccup kissing HTTYD2

By the time of the sequel, Astrid and Hiccup are an official couple and betrothed. She even teases him in an affectionate manner, and calls him babe when they are fighting Drago's army. They are comfortable sitting very close to each other, as opposed to in Animal House when they nervously moved away from each other. They are even so close that Astrid casually braids Hiccup's hair. Astrid also helps Hiccup in personal problems he can't figure out on his own. Also, she has displayed greater loyalty, trust and protectiveness towards Hiccup, just like Valka throughout the movie. They exchange two cheek kisses and a big kiss on the lips at the end.

Stormfly

Main article: Astrid and Stormfly's Relationship
Astrid hugging Stormfly
"Whoo-hoo! Haha! We're going vertical, Stormfly!"
―Astrid[src]

Much like the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless, Stormfly seems to be Astrid's best dragon friend.

Astrid first met Stormfly in the arena where she was a training dragon. She hit the Deadly Nadder with Hiccup's shield, but Stormfly still let Astrid ride her in the battle against the Red Death. Afterwards, Stormfly became Astrid's dragon. The two are very close and have similar personalities. Both are competitive, beautiful, and can be somewhat violent occasionally. Stormfly is not adverse to having people other than Astrid ride her. Still, she's very loyal to Astrid, and is protective as well. Astrid seems to have lots of confidence in her dragon as she says in How to Pick Your Dragon that even though she's beautiful, she's still very tough. In Night of the Hunters, Part 1, when Stormfly was captured by the Dragon Hunters, Astrid showed deep concern and fierce determination to get her dragon back.

In How to Train Your Dragon 2, they both continue to maintain a close, loving bond with each other.

Parents

Astrid's parents were first mentioned on Dragons: Race to the Edge, Season 1 but have not made any appearances in the franchise thus far. Astrid appears to care deeply for her parents and often worries over their safety. In "Team Astrid", she took it up on herself to find a way to protect them from incoming danger.

Sneaky

Sneaky is a Terrible Terror that Astrid trained, during the episode Worst in Show. She has a good friendship with Sneaky as she trained him for stealth.

Toothless

"All right, I admit it. This is pretty cool. It's . . . amazing. He's amazing."
―Astrid during the romantic flight[src]

In How to Train Your Dragon, Astrid and Toothless are both hostile to each other during their first meeting, which ends with Astrid fleeing the scene. In an attempt to change Astrid's mind about dragons, Toothless reluctantly agrees to help Hiccup kidnap her. With their first encounter still afresh in mind, Toothless decides to take her for a spin as soon as she seats herself on top of him. It's only after she voices her apology to Hiccup that Toothless slows down and ascends into the skies, offering her a new perspective of the world. Overridden by joyous realization and taken aback by the beauty of it all, Astrid smiles for the first time in the movie. She then proceeds to tell Toothless he is amazing, making him smile back at her.

Toothless and Astrid bond over their mutual affection for Hiccup and greatly appreciate each other's presence in his life. In Gift of the Night Fury, during Snoggletog, Astrid is ecstatic to see Toothless return and reunite with Hiccup. Five years later, in How to Train Your Dragon 2, Toothless gives Astrid a big tongue-lolling smile when she arrives on Itchy Armpit. As he runs up to her, she gives him a loving scratch under his chin, showing they have developed a close and comfortable relationship. Astrid also makes a mention of riding Toothless for Hiccup once Hiccup becomes too busy with his Chiefly duties, implying she has flown Toothless before.

In Out of the Frying Pan, Toothless attempted to save Astrid when she was trapped inside the volcano.

Heather

Main article: Astrid and Heather's Relationship
"[The flowers] are for Astrid as a thank-you for letting me borrow her axe."
―Heather[src]

Heather is one of the few people Astrid is very close to despite the fact that they started off as rivals. They first became best friends after Heather reunited with Astrid again in Race to the Edge and was now a warrior just like Astrid. Heather has also played an active part in urging Astrid to express her feelings for Hiccup.

In Heather Report, Part 1, Astrid initially believed Heather about being attacked by pirates like everyone else, but her suspicions quickly rose after seeing Heather sneaking around in middle of the night and continued to grow as Heather became more and more interested in the Book of Dragons. Astrid eventually discovered Heather was working with the Outcasts but her friends remained unconvinced. Heather also caused strains in Astrid's relationship with both Hiccup and Stormfly which made Astrid all the more hostile to her. She finally had a change of heart after she disguised as Heather to go undercover to Outcast Island where she discovered that Heather was being blackmailed by Alvin. Astrid ended up saving Heather's parents with the help of the riders and Heather herself, and the girls parted ways on friendly terms.

A&Hhug3

In Have Dragon Will Travel, Part 1, they stumbled into each other again nearly three years later and Heather ended up trapping Astrid and Stormfly in a cave. While angry at first, Astrid was quickly won over by the revamped version of Heather after she explained her actions. She especially loved how much more of a fighter Heather had become, and was extremely impressed by her battle axe, wanting one for herself. In Have Dragon Will Travel, Part 2, Astrid and Heather spent time together bonding over throwing axes as well as having some "boy talk." When Heather decided to leave Dragon's Edge, Astrid was saddened to lose a friend and tried to convince her to stay.

Astrid initially felt betrayed by Heather in Night of the Hunters, Part 1 when she saw her former friend working with the Dragon Hunters. Her rage was however short-lived as it turned out Heather was merely spying on the Dragon Hunters. Heather managed to convince Astrid about keeping her intentions a secret from the others. They secretly stayed in touch for a while before meeting up again in Snow Way Out where Heather supplied Astrid with information on the Dragon Hunters' targets and their leader, Viggo Grimborn. Astrid later admitted to the other Dragon Riders about their plan. By the time of Maces and Talons, Part 1, Astrid grew very concerned about Heather's role as a spy and wanted to pull her out. When Viggo figured out she was a spy, Astrid feared what the Hunters would do to Heather. In Maces and Talons, Part 2, she was very happy that Heather managed to escape.

After Heather officially joins the riders, she ends up moving into Astrid's hut to live with her. She was so close with Heather that Heather knew about Hiccstrid before the other riders.

Stoick the Vast

"We're warriors, you and I."
―Stoick[src]

In the first movie, Stoick acted protective of Astrid when he ushered her away from danger and shielded her against the Monstrous Nightmare in the kill ring. It was later on revealed in Team Astrid that Stoick relates to Astrid quite a bit and can see himself in her. She is also the first person Stoick looks to in regards of Hiccup.

In Burning Midnight it was mentioned that Astrid was considered a daughter that Stoick and Valka had dreamed of and wanted. In How to Train Your Dragon 2 while Dragon Racing was going on, Stoick yelled when Astrid won "That's my future daughter in law!" This means he is proud of her as if she was his real daughter. The exact meaning of calling her his daughter in law it could be interpreted that he is simply looking forward to his son's girlfriend becoming something more, or it could literally mean what Stoick said that Astrid is going to be his future daughter-in-law, which would mean that Hiccup and Astrid are going to get married.

Astrid was greatly saddened when Stoick died, and fired a flaming arrow onto Stoick's ship to honor her chieftain.

Gobber the Belch

In Fright of Passage, when Astrid was a small child, she wanted to get revenge on the Flightmare for turning her "fearless" uncle into a frozen one. However she was stopped by Gobber because she would need "more than that wee axe". Gobber is shown to be somewhat friendly with Astrid, regardless of the situation.

Valka

"I can see why Hiccup is so fond of Berk and its Dragons... and you, Astrid!"
―Valka[src]
Astrid & Valka

Astrid speaking with Valka.

Astrid was surprised to learn Hiccup's mother was alive and looked positively awed when she saw her on top Cloudjumper taking control of all the dragons.

There was little interaction between Astrid and Valka in How to Train Your Dragon 2, but they appear to get along well in Dragons: Rise of Berk. They often train dragons together and give one another compliments. Valka is also openly supportive of Hiccup's relationship with Astrid and even offers them relationship advice.

After witnessing a quarrel between the young couple one morning, Valka voices her concerns to Gobber. She is worried Hiccup and Astrid will make the same mistakes as she did in her relationship with Stoick. She even attempts to talk to Hiccup and Astrid about it but they inform her they have already made amends since morning and are off to a picnic on Perilous Paradise island now. Valka quickly learns the young riders have good communication and don't hold grudges against each other for long, and decides then to never interfere again. (Dragons: Rise of Berk)

In Breakneck Bog, Astrid supported Hiccup's search for the long-lost gift from Valka that was on Breakneck Bog and encouraged the other teens to help.

Snotlout Jorgenson

"I don't hate you, Snotlout. You frustrate the living you know. But you're one of us. I'm not gonna let anything happen to you."
―Astrid to Snotlout[src]

Astrid seems to be appalled by Snotlout and his advances for the majority of the time. While Snotlout on the other hand has had a crush on her for years and is constantly trying to win her over. It isn't until they are adults they start to get along as friends.

In When Lightning Strikes, when Snotlout suggested that they build a big statue of himself as Thor and kissed his own biceps Astrid was shown to be disgusted. Likewise in Appetite for Destruction, she appeared to find the thought of kissing Snotlout repulsive. After she lost a bet against Hiccup about the airmail system in which case she had to kiss Snotlout on the lips, she went back on her word and instead threatened Hiccup when he teased her about it. In Total Nightmare, when Snotlout said that Hookfang must have picked up a few pointers from his master in regard to being a ladies' man, Astrid replies that she doubted it because the female Monstrous Nightmare wasn't dry heaving.

Every time Snotlout has tried to get close to Astrid, she has responded with violence and disdain. In Free Scauldy she threw a rock at him and flipped him over for flirting with her. Once realizing her previous methods and aggressive responses weren't doing anything to deter Snotlout, Astrid eventually turned the tables on him by pretending that he has finally won her over. She then began flirting back in a saccharine manner, which quickly scared Snotlout into submission, much to Astrid's enjoyment.

In Race to Fireworm Island, Astrid showed a gentler side in the face of Snotlout's obvious worry about Hookfang, telling him that there was nothing wrong with caring and almost crying when Hookfang was supposedly mortally wounded by the Fireworm Queen. In Total Nightmare, Astrid did show concern for Snotlout when he decided to go up against a Titan Monstrous Nightmare.

By How to Train Your Dragon 2, it is revealed that Snotlout has given up his pursuit of Astrid, since she has officially been in a relationship with Hiccup for some time by this point, and has transferred his affections to Ruffnut. This has improved Snotlout's relationship with Astrid.

Fishlegs Ingerman

Astrid gets along really well with Fishlegs and is able to cooperate with him whenever they are teamed up. There has never been shown any arguments between them except during the Terrible Terror training competition during the episode Worst in Show. Just like Hiccup, Astrid respects Fishlegs and stands up for him whenever Snotlout makes a jab at him. While Astrid may care for him as a friend, she has also made it clear he is definitely not her type. She seemed very surprised by Heather's attraction to him and in Big Man on Berk, she was repulsed when he made advances on her as Thor Bonecrusher.

In Edge of Disaster, Part 2, Ruffnut states that Astrid has no respect for Fishlegs. However Astrid has not been shown to disrespect Fishlegs in any episode of Race To The Edge so far. It may be possible what Ruffnut said isn't true.

Astrid comforted Fishlegs after Heather left the Edge with Dagur in Gold Rush.

Tuffnut Thorston

"Try to follow along with that pretty little head of yours."
―Tuffnut telling Astrid about the new language he and Ruff invented.
Astrid had almost no interaction with either Tuffnut or Ruffnut in the first movie but becomes good friends with them as they grow older. She seems to be closer to Tuffnut than Ruffnut though as she is seen getting along with him much easier.

In Night of the Hunters, Part 2, Astrid and Tuffnut fought side by side. Likewise in the Edge of the Disaster two-parter when they were forced to cooperate while Dragon's Edge was under siege. Tuffnut and Astrid quickly agreed they needed to secure the edge and save his Ruffnut after she was taken captive. While Astrid wanted to go by the book to defend their turf, Tuffnut had more Loki'sh intentions in mind. After failing to agree on one plan, they ended up settling for each of them making their own preparation and meeting up again later to decide on which idea to use. Astrid ended up convincing Tuffnut to put her plan into action first, and they managed to sink two incoming ships. Once Astrid's plan ran its course she reluctantly agreed to try out some of Tuffnut's insane ideas. They were able to withhold the hunters long enough for Hiccup to arrive back at Dragon's Edge with a group of wild dragons ready to strike.

In Shock and Awe, he and Ruffnut pulled an ill-timed prank on Astrid midair. Tuffnut explained that Astrid's the "crown jewel" and a shot at Loki'ing her is always worth it. Astrid promised him payback. At the end of the episode, she attached the twins' hut to a rope connected to Stormfly and deserted it on an islet in the middle of the ocean. Tuff and Ruff concluded she was an evil genius.

By the time of the latter seasons, Astrid and Tuffnut are willing to meet each other halfway. Tuffnut has even started giving Astrid nicknames such as A and Hoff, demonstrating that is on friendly terms with her.

Ruffnut Thorston

"Astrid, Astrid, Astrid.. Everyone's always talking about Astrid."
―Ruffnut
Astrid's relationship with Ruffnut starts off a little less solid. In the first movie they are often paired up together during training sessions and Ruffnut even comments that Astrid can do better than Hiccup. It is however later revealed that Ruffnut and Astrid aren't particulary close and often clash due to their personality differences. They eventually end up becoming better friends, although Astrid is much closer to Heather.

In Edge of Disaster, Part 1 and Edge of Disaster, Part 2, Astrid was forced to work with Ruffnut and Tuffnut to create more defenses for Dragon's Edge. Astrid was not pleased by this and was further irritated by the twins' incompetence. Eventually, it got to a stage where Astrid lost her patience and began to berate them. Ruffnut, who was fed up with Astrid's constant criticism, began to scold Astrid for her mighty attitude and ended up mortifying her. Astrid eventually apologized for her behaviour and they made up.

In Shell Shocked, Part 2, Ruffnut hugged Astrid and appeared to be very happy about Hiccup and Astrid's relationship.

Eret, Son of Eret

Astrid: "Careful what you wish for!"
Eret: "What is this?"
Astrid: "A kidnapping."
―Astrid and Eret, after Stormfly grabs Eret

Astrid's relationship with Eret is rocky at first, with Eret trapping Stormfly. Then when Hiccup faked surrendering to Eret, Astrid was concerned. However, Astrid got much more time to get to know Eret than Hiccup did, as she managed to capture him quite early on in the film. When Eret double-crosses them and gives them away to Drago, Astrid is visibly and understandably upset, and feels betrayed. However, he does eventually save Stormfly, help to bring down Drago, and joins the Dragon Riders' ranks.

Garffiljorg

Astrid stayed with Garff on Melody Island in Living on the Edge after he was attacked by dragon hunters. By the time of No Dragon Left Behind she and Stormfly had grown quite close to him and were reluctant to say goodbye.

Throk

"Don't close your eyes, Astrid. We must stay awake. For Hiccup Haddock and Queen Mala."
―Throk tries to keep Astrid conscious while they wait for help in Out of the Frying Pan.[src]
Throk was willing sacrifice himself so everyone else could live. He did his best to keep Astrid conscious while they were stranded together inside the volcano and later helped her into Hiccup's awaiting arms.

Sleuther

After becoming temporary blind, Astrid relies on her other senses and manages to tame Sleuther, becoming the first person to train a Triple Stryke.

Hookfang

She first meets Hookfang at the Kill Ring where she tried to protect Hiccup by throwing a hammer at his face. Like the other riders, Astrid would have thought that Hookfang was a wild and aggressive dragon. Later though, she is shown to bond with him when she switches dragons with Snotlout. In Race to Fireworm Island, Astrid was also very concerned when Hookfang was dying, but was relieved with joy when the Fireworm Queen restored his flames. Though Hookfang did try to show some affection to Astrid, she wasn't to happy about it. In A Tale of Two Dragons, she was however, impressed with how powerful Hookfang was and also finding the hidden ability of his with Wing Blast. Astrid also becomes concerned and angry when Drago Bludvist placed his foot on Hookfang's snout.

Gustav Larson

In The Flight Stuff, Astrid, like the other riders, saw Gustav as a tiny Snotlout when he became dragon rider in training. By the time Gustav was 16, Astrid was as annoyed with his attraction to her just like Snotlout when he fantasized about she and him in Gone Gustav Gone.

In Team Astrid, Astrid then appointed Gustav as the leader and captain of her auxiliary team.

Drago Bludvist

"He's only the son of Stoick the Vast, his heir to the throne of Berk, and the greatest dragon master this world has ever seen! And unless you let us go, right now, he will blast through here on his Night Fury and blow your entire fleet of ships to splinters."
―Astrid bragging to Drago[src]

Astrid along with the rest of gang end up getting captured by Drago's men after being led into his base site by Eret, Son of Eret.

Astrid doesn't seem the least bit intimidated by Drago when she first sees him, and even attempts talking him into releasing them. Her plan ends up backfiring on her, but she and the rest of the gang are still able to escape thanks to Eret changing sides.

Alvin the Treacherous

"Like I said, the book can only get you so far, Alvin."
―Astrid trying to trick Alvin into giving her the Book of Dragons.[src]

Alvin often targets Astrid to get to Hiccup.

In Heather Report, Part 2, Astrid was able to fool Alvin into thinking she was Heather by disguising herself as her. Alvin noted Astrid seemed feistier than the original Heather was but stayed convinced by the act until Astrid tried to take off with the Book of Dragons on the Monstrous Nightmare she had just befriended.

Dagur the Deranged

"I really am trying to change, Astrid."
―Dagur[src]

Astrid starts off hating Dagur, and often finds herself engaging in physical combat with him. Dagur attempts to kill her on multiple occasions, and Astrid doesn't hold back on her punches either. During the first few seasons, Dagur refers to Astrid as "the girl" but eventually begins calling her by name.

In the third season of Race to the Edge, in Family on the Edge, Dagur reappears as a changed man. Astrid initially doubts him and his true intentions, considering him an undercover spy working for Viggo Grimborn. Dagur encourages Astrid to check him out for herself, and ends up impressing her as she trains him. Astrid warms up to Dagur but is still cautious and warns him to not betray them. Once Heather finds out about his presence on the Edge, Astrid tries convincing her that Dagur has changed, stating she initially thought he was a spy too.

It is hinted Astrid was saddened by his presumed death.

Since Dagur never did died. The two seems to be on good terms now.

Viggo Grimborn

"To be in love with a girl who is your partner in battle, not sure how I would balance such a precarious situation."
―Viggo taunting Hiccup about his relationship with Astrid[src]

Viggo set up the trap that led to Astrid falling fatally ill in the Buffalord Soldier. He also seems to be aware of Hiccup's feelings for Astrid, and ends up using them against Hiccup in Shell Shocked, Part 2. He somehow manages to capture Astrid and uses her to retrieve the Dragon Eye back from Hiccup.

Ryker Grimborn

"Astrid was right. You look like a psycho."
―Hiccup on Glacier Island[src]

During a morning flight with Stormfly, Astrid came across a group of dragon hunters and their leader Ryker Grimborn. She quickly knows that he is a cruel person and decides to learn more about the new enemy. Despite Astrid's efforts to stay hidden from Ryker's sight, he was able to detect Stormfly by smell. Astrid attempted an escape but it was to no prevail. Stormfly quickly lost her balance after being hit by one the hunters' arrows, throwing her rider off her saddle and into the ocean. Ryker and his men then dragged Stormfly with them onto their ship and took off. Astrid could only watch in horror as she was left behind floating in the sea. When she is rescued by Hiccup and brought to the Edge, she expresses her rage and anger towards him.

Hroar

"We're kindred spirits, you and I."
―Hroar to Astrid.[src]

Astrid dumping Hroar into a pile of rotten fish.

Hroar is a character from the DreamWorks Dragons Comics (Titan Comics). He first appears in the 4th volume of the series called The Stowaway.

The newcomer initially introduces himself as a stowaway from Knaff, and during his stay on Berk, he spends a good deal of his time with Astrid, even referring to her as his kindred spirit. Astrid's vague interest in Hroar quickly dissipates once she discovers he has ulterior motives and is working for The Outcast Tribe.

She ends up dropping him into a fish barrel as payback.

Arngrim Dammen

Astrid was suspicious of Dammen's friendliness and curiosity about Stormfly. She was the only one who really suspected him despite Hiccup telling her Dammen was just being friendly. She expresses hatred towards Dammen after he captures Stormfly and she is restless until she finds him.

Other Family

In the episode When Lightning Strikes, Astrid says she had an aunt who was cursed by Odin. She had to pay tribute to him by sailing to the end of the Earth, but kept showing up from the opposite direction because "she couldn't find it". Astrid's grandfather was mentioned in Breakneck Bog. He told her the reasons behind the mysterious disappearances were pirates. Astrid also has an uncle named Finn, known as Fearless Finn Hofferson. In Fright of Passage, he was frozen by the Flightmare, bringing shame to the Hofferson family. He possibly passed away sometime between facing the Dragon and its return ten years later. Astrid had a lot of respect for her uncle and trained very hard to avenge him in order to restore her family's honor. In the Race to the Edge episode "Team Astrid", she blames herself for the the attack on Berk stating that she wanted to protect her family at all times. She was willing to stay behind on Berk for them meaning she loves and cares for them greatly.
