Astrid Hofferson is a female Viking warrior of Clan Hofferson of the Hooligan tribe. She's striking, tough, beautiful, and her determined and strong personality makes her hard to impress. Astrid is 15 years old in How to Train Your Dragon, 16 in Defenders of Berk and in Riders of Berk, 19 in Race to the Edge, and 20 in the sequel. In spite of her initial fall outs with Hiccup and disdain toward dragons, Astrid ends up becoming his lifelong confidante, thanks to Toothless, and quickly adapts to a life with dragons.
She is Hiccup's love interest in the first movie and the series, and his longtime girlfriend by the time of the sequel.
Astrid's name is North Germanic for "Divine Beauty".
Role in the Film Franchise
BackgroundRight from an early age, Astrid began working to restore her family's honor as well as to earn validation as a warrior. In a flashback during Fright of Passage, Astrid was shown attempting to take care of the Flightmare by herself. She was quickly stopped by her uncle Finn Hofferson who told her this was not her battle yet. Finn then decided to confront the dragon on his own, leaving his niece watching in concern from afar.
Astrid didn't see the outcome herself but heard from onlookers that her uncle froze in the Flightmare's presence. She considered stepping in, but was held back by Gobber who informed her that her wee axe would be useless against a dragon. Unable to accept what had occurred, and the shame bestowed upon her family's name, Astrid settled to plan for vengeance for the next time the Flightmare would appear.
Although her favorite uncle's demise certainly weighs in, Astrid's Viking warrior status is primarily based on the Hofferson's being a decorated warrior family. On Race to the Edge, Astrid also momentarily joined the Berk Guard, and later trained an auxiliary team to protect Berk from invaders.
Astrid is first seen at the beginning of the film during a Dragon raid, helping by putting out fires with Snotlout, Fishlegs and the twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut, while Hiccup (doing an introductory narration) introduces her to the audience. After Hiccup is sent home by his father, Astrid is among the group but does not join in their mockery of Hiccup.
She is later seen with the other students in Dragon Training, along with Hiccup. During their first encounter with a Gronckle as their first lesson, Astrid is shown to be the star pupil as the other students are knocked out of the lesson one by one. Later, in the Great Hall, the other students mock Hiccup's performance and Astrid doesn't hesitate to criticize him either.
Gobber hands the students the Dragon Manual for the group to study and Astrid is one of the only ones to have read it besides Fishlegs and Hiccup. During the student's next lesson - this time against a Deadly Nadder in a labyrinth - Astrid again comes out on top. Angered with Hiccup getting in her way, she is quick to berate him by saying that they're about to inherit their parents' war and commands him to figure out what side he fights for. That night, Astrid is listening to Gobber's stories about dragons with the others when she notices Hiccup suddenly leave without saying anything. Although curious, she thinks nothing of it.
At the next lesson, the students are facing a Hideous Zippleback in paired teams: Astrid with Ruff, Hiccup with Fishlegs and Snotlout with Tuff. Due to Snotlout and Tuff's jeers, Astrid and Ruff lose their buckets of water, which they needed to douse the Zippleback's spark-breathing head. While Hiccup loses the last bucket of water, Astrid is shocked to see Hiccup somehow frighten the Zippleback back into its cage by merely motioning to it. As the lessons progress, it soon becomes apparent that Hiccup is becoming better and better, always seeming to have a way with the dragons and exerting control over them. He soon overtakes Astrid as the star pupil, which stirs her jealousy even further. After one particular lesson, Astrid vents her anger in the forest by throwing her axe into trees when she sees Hiccup sneaking around. She attempts to follow him but loses sight of him through the foliage.
The following night, Astrid hears crash from Hiccup's stall at the blacksmith shop and finds Hiccup is "Acting weird—well, weirder" and then suddenly disappearing, further deepening her doubt.
Not long after, Astrid and Hiccup are the only students left in the race to see who gets the right to slay their first dragon. They are faced with the Gronckle when she threatens Hiccup to stay out of her way. Despite Astrid's best efforts, she still ends up losing when Hiccup immobilizes the Gronckle in little to no time at all. The Viking Elder, Gothi, denies Astrid the right to kill the Monstrous Nightmare and instead gives it to Hiccup.
This time, Astrid manages to follow Hiccup to the cove he's been visiting after training, along with her trusty axe. Astrid then begins interrogating Hiccup on the real reason for his sudden improvements in Dragon Training as well as his riding vest which he has never shown in public. Astrid then notices the figure of Toothless which appeared to alarm her, as she pushed Hiccup down with her as she dove to the ground, but before she can recognize Toothless, Hiccup distracts her by admitting that he is "through with the lies" as well as "making outfits", which causes Astrid to twist Hiccup's arm painfully "for the lies" and hit him hard with the handle of her axe "for everything else", which finally provokes Toothless.
Thinking that Astrid is a threat to Hiccup, Toothless charges out with a loud and aggressive roar and is about to attack. Hiccup grabs Astrid's axe, casts it away and stops Toothless in mid-pounce by telling him that Astrid is a friend. After an introduction to one another, during which Toothless snarls at her, Astrid realizes that the reason Hiccup had beaten her in Dragon Training was that he had befriended a dragon, which was the hated enemy of the Vikings, and runs off in anger to tell the villagers. But in the middle of the forest, she is snatched up and placed screaming on the pinnacle of a tree by Toothless and Hiccup where he asks for a chance to explain.
She refuses to hear any explanation, yet Hiccup manages to talk her into letting him show her instead and she climbs onto Toothless behind Hiccup (Toothless snarls at her as she gets on). Hiccup tells the Night Fury to gently land. However, Toothless is not so tame as that and deliberately scares Astrid with daring flying maneuvers until she finally apologizes to the dragon. Toothless finally stops and takes her and Hiccup on an extraordinarily brilliant flight above the clouds and Berk. She gradually becomes more comfortable with Hiccup and even rests her head on his shoulder. Astrid is amazed by the flight and what she sees, realizing just how wrong she was about Toothless and Hiccup.
During the flight however, when reminding Hiccup of the oncoming event on which Hiccup "Will have to kill a dragon", Toothless suddenly flies towards parts unknown and the group soon find themselves in a flock of dragons carrying their kill and food towards none other than the Dragons' Nest. Astrid and Hiccup are shocked to discover the dragons steal and raid from the village to feed a monstrous dragon called the Red Death in order to avoid being eaten themselves.
When they get back, Astrid wants to tell the village about what they saw but Hiccup manages to talk her out of it for the time being, fearing the other Vikings will kill Toothless. Impressed by Hiccup's persistence on keeping Toothless a secret and his loyalty to Toothless, she agrees and suddenly punches him on the arm "for kidnapping her" before kissing him on the cheek "for everything else."
The next day, Hiccup has to take his final exam and is expected to kill his first dragon, the Monstrous Nightmare. Astrid wishes Hiccup good luck and agrees to make sure the Vikings don't find Toothless if something goes wrong, but adds, "Just...promise me it won't go wrong." to which he never gives an answer. She watches as Hiccup faces the Nightmare and tosses aside his weapon, shield and helmet, intending to show the Vikings the truth about dragons. But Stoick, infuriated by his son's traitorous behaviors, screams for the match to stop and strikes the handrail of the ring.
The noise frightens the Nightmare, driving it to attack Hiccup, which is exactly what Hiccup tells Astrid he's worried about. Astrid gets into the arena and tries to help Hiccup escape but ends up in danger as well until Stoick gets into the ring to help them. Astrid manages to clamber out but Hiccup ends up in the Nightmare's claws before he's saved by Toothless. Toothless fights off the Nightmare but won't leave Hiccup, thinking the Vikings are threats and almost kills Stoick in the process. The Vikings swarm Toothless and Astrid has to stop Hiccup from interfering so he doesn't get hurt. Later she hears that Stoick disowns Hiccup.
Astrid attempts to comfort Hiccup for his losses after the Vikings set sail for the Nest and the deadly Red Death which the Vikings aren't aware of. She asks why Hiccup didn't kill Toothless that first chance, saying she wants to remember what he says. Hiccup finally tells her that he didn't because at that critical moment, he saw that Toothless was just as scared as he himself was; for him it was like looking in a mirror.
Astrid's words then motivate Hiccup to try to save the tribe and do "something crazy".
Astrid rounds up the other students and Hiccup teaches them enough about riding and controlling the various dragons. Astrid stops Snotlout's attempt to grab a weapon when training the Monstrous Nightmare. Finally they fly off to rescue their tribe from the Red Death which has broken out of the Nest to attack. Astrid sits astride the Deadly Nadder and drops off Hiccup so he can free Toothless from his chains while she goes to help the others fight the Red Death.
Astrid and Stormfly nearly end up getting eaten and she's knocked off her dragon. Thankfully, she's saved as Toothless catches her, and she enjoys a heart-quaking flight upside-down. Hiccup drops her off as he and Toothless lead the Red Death into the sky where they fight it and send it plummeting to its doom in a massive, fiery explosion.
When it seems that Hiccup has died in the fight, Astrid is brought to tears at seeing the sight before her. When Stoick announces that Hiccup survived, she is overjoyed at the news. When Hiccup finally wakes up back on Berk to a new village of dragons and Vikings living together (along with his prosthetic leg), Astrid punches him on the arm again for scaring her and then kisses him on the lips tenderly. Aside Stormfly, Astrid joins Hiccup, Toothless, and the other Vikings with their dragons as they soar together into the sky.
Astrid and Stormfly are helping put out a fire that is raging through the home of Gobber, along with Hiccup, Fishlegs, Snotlout and their dragons. She listens as Gobber argues with Stoick over the cause of the fire: Gobber's underpants or the Boneknapper. When Gobber prepares to depart with his sheep, Phil, Astrid enthusiastically agrees to go with Gobber, when Hiccup says, "Alright, Vikings! Grab your shields."
Astrid helps Hiccup and the others row a seven-man longboat while Gobber appreciates their help and Fishlegs comments on the Boneknapper's legend. It isn't until Ruffnut says, in response to Gobber telling them that the Boneknapper is a silent killer, "So if we don't hear anything... we're dead?", that Astrid - along with all the others - stop rowing and listen to the silence. She is as startled as the other teens when Phil breaks the silence, causing Gobber to laugh. Gobber then decides to tell them about his first encounter with the Boneknapper, which involves a frozen Viking punching him in the face - twice.
Due to Gobber's distracting story, they crash and sink their boat, so they stand and listen to Gobber's second encounter, this time involving a Hammerhead Whale, a third story with a volcano and a Hammerhead Yak, and another time, involving the Hammerhead Whale, Hammerhead Yak and Thor. The tales grew so wild that no-one, not even Hiccup, really believed him so Gobber decided to prove it with a trap after Hiccup tries to reason with him, due to Astrid's prompting.
While they are waiting for the Boneknapper to try and attack a disguised Fishlegs, Astrid complains to Hiccup how they should be trying to get home and is so distracted that she, along with everyone else, fail to notice the Boneknapper's arrival, except Fishlegs. After taking cover in the trap, she tries to convince Gobber to return the bone he had unintentionally stolen, hidden inside the treasure chest from his stories, after Hiccup figures out what the Boneknapper wants. She flinches when Gobber's pants fall down and is just glad that they have a ride home as soon as Gobber returned the bone, making the Boneknapper an 'overgrown puppy dog'.
They all fly back to Berk on the Boneknapper, with Astrid seated behind Hiccup. They were all equally shocked when multiple female Boneknappers responded to their ride's mating call.
Astrid and the other inhabitants of Berk are preparing to celebrate their holiday Snoggletog for the first time with their dragons, as Astrid is seen helping decorate, assisted by Stormfly. After Stoick makes a speech, a strange sound causes all of Berk's dragons to fly off, including Stormfly, during which Astrid questions "Where's Hiccup?".
When Hiccup arrives, everyone swarms him with questions about their dragons' sudden departure but alas Hiccup has no answers. Despite Stoick's trying to cheer the tribe up in the Great Hall, everyone is sad and disappointed. Astrid admits to her friends she'd been looking forward to spending the holiday with Stormfly but she tries to pep up by suggesting they should come up with some new holiday traditions, though Hiccup is the only one who supports her.
The next morning, Astrid tries to spread cheer with her new beverage, Yak-Nog (an obvious allusion to egg-nog) and Snotlout is the first to try it. However he silently regrets it, especially since he has to swallow it instead of spitting it out in front of Astrid. Fishlegs is at first eager to try some, but awkwardly declines after Snotlout shakes his head behind Astrid's back, warning him that the "beverage" is not fit for human consumption. Ruffnut and Tuffnut refuse based on the smell alone, so she decides to go see Hiccup.
She finds him in the forge, where he's working on a new prosthetic that will allow Toothless to fly without Hiccup's assistance, as he was bothered by Tuffnut saying that Toothless can't go anywhere without Hiccup's help. Astrid thinks it's a great idea and subsequently calls Hiccup amazing while running off to "spread more holiday cheer". Thankfully for Hiccup she doesn't notice him spit out her Yak-Nog once she has left.
A few days later, Astrid is forced to duck while Meatlug and Hiccup fly where her head was. She shouts, "Hiccup?! Where are you going?!" and he replies, while holding onto the Gronckle for dear life, "I HAVE NO IDEA!!"
Astrid then confronts Fishlegs for chaining up his own dragon in a barn when the twins find several dragon eggs covered up in a nearby haystack, causing the teens to realize Meatlug is a female dragon, and that everyone's dragons must have left to lay their eggs.
At this point, Astrid has another idea for a Snoggletog tradition: They wrap Meatlug's eggs with ribbons and secretly place them in several homes in the village for everyone to find once the eggs hatch. Once finished, they get excited when all of a sudden one of the houses blows up and a baby Gronckle lands on Fishlegs, causing Astrid to realize the eggs explode when they hatch. Chaos subsequently ensues as the rest of the eggs begin to explode, damaging and setting fire to several buildings.
The Gronckle babies are rounded up and the villagers begin repairs when they see a cloud of dragons being led by Hiccup on Hookfang descend from the sky, bringing with them the dragons' babies. Everyone is reunited with their dragons, as is Astrid with Stormfly, and she's overjoyed to meet Stormfly's babies. Stoick then calls everyone and their Dragons to the Great Hall to celebrate. During the festivities, Astrid notices Hiccup and consoles him, knowing it's hard for him to see everyone else with their dragons, but says he did a wonderful thing and thanks him with a kiss and hug. Feeling sad, Hiccup asks Astrid where Toothless went, and she replies she doesn't know when she notices Toothless sneak into the Great Hall. She then teases Hiccup a bit before pushing him around so he can see Toothless who reveals he left to find and return Hiccup's Viking helmet. Hiccup hugs Toothless and Astrid wishes everyone a happy Snoggletog.
Astrid and Hiccup's relationship remains for the series, though differently than in the film. In the first few episodes, they were shown as great friends, often visiting and confiding in each other, though sometimes awkward with each other around the other teens.
Soon their relationship becomes more apparent, such as when Hiccup and Astrid had planned to meet for a ride. When he forgot and hung out with Heather instead, Astrid was jealous despite her denying the fact.
When she, Hiccup, and Fishlegs went to Breakneck Bog, Astrid convinces the other teens to stay and help Hiccup retrieve his chest that was from his mother that was stolen by the Fog Monster, when they were about to leave in fear. She does this by telling them to "put yourself in his shoes" and asking them "What if it was your mother?", proving that she cares deeply about Hiccup's situation.Hiccup and Astrid have also been shown to be far more willing to "share" dragons, with Hiccup riding on Stormfly with Astrid when Toothless leaves to search for an old foe, and Astrid accompanying Hiccup on Toothless after Heather tried to steal Stormfly.
She was also very vocal in her defense of Hiccup when Snotlout made various insensitive comments about Hiccup's role in depriving Toothless of the ability to fly solo, and almost going over to beat him up before Hiccup stopped her.
Dragons: Riders of Berk Comic Books
In Dragon Down
In The Ice Castle Stormfly goes missing and Astrid has to track her down.
In The Stowaway
Astrid encouraged Hiccup to defy his father's ban on flying. She then defended Berk against Alvin and his Outcast's attack. Later, Astrid put together a survival test that involved most of the other Dragon Trainers surviving on Dragon Island without their dragons.
Astrid and Snotlout picked up water to help Berk when the well went dry. Later, Astrid defended Berk when Whispering Deaths, along with the Screaming Death, attacked. She and the others were able to fight them off.
Astrid redeemed her family's honor when Aurvandil's Fire and the Flightmare returned ten years after it had shamed her uncle "Fearless" Finn Hofferson by freezing him with fear. Astrid and Hiccup then learned that the Flightmare paralyzed it's victims by spraying a mist at them. Astrid, Hiccup, Fishlegs and their dragons then figured that the Flightmare was following glowing algae in the river. The three of them and their dragons then cut a new path away from the village. They also had their dragons eat the algae in order to blind the Flightmare and lead it away from Berk.
Dragons: Defenders of Berk Comic Books
In a flashback during which most of the short takes place, Astrid and the other Dragon riders are catching sheep who are running around Berk, which turns into a competition to collect as many sheep as possible. When Hiccup is made acting chief by Stoick in his absence, Astrid persuades Hiccup to continue the Dragon Race as it is a great way to blow off steam. During one race, when Astrid and Snotlout are heading for the black sheep, due to neither of them backing off, they violently collide, resulting in Astrid breaking her left arm and rendering her unable to participate. When Stoick returns and finds out that Hiccup has replaced the Regatta with Dragon Racing (for the good of the people), Stoick proceeds with the Dragon Race and appoints Astrid as the referee for the first annual Berk Dragon Race. After Team Snotnuts' (Snotlout, Ruffnut and Tuffnut) "black" sheep is revealed to be just a sheep coated with black paint and Team Hiclegs (Hiccup and Fishlegs) brings home the real black sheep, Astrid announces a reversal in which Team Hiclegs is declared as the winner.
Dragons: Race to the Edge
Three years after the Berserker War, Astrid and Stormfly were accepted into the Berk Guard. However, she then went with Hiccup and the other riders to track down Dagur the Deranged in the Ship Graveyard. There, she and the other riders waited for Dagur while Hiccup and Toothless explored The Reaper. Unfortunately, Astrid and the other riders were then captured by Dagur and his men and place in one of The Reapers cages. Luckily, she and the others were then rescued from the sinking Reaper.
Astrid then went with Hiccup, Gothi, and the other riders to Glacier Island. There, they searched for a Snow Wraith in order to get a tooth to unlock the Dragon Eye. They were succesful. Astrid and the other riders then looked at symbols projected from the Dragon Eye, seeing new dragons and places. She then went with Hiccup and the other riders to search for Dagur beyond the Archipelago's borders.
After they camped out on a island, Astrid and the other riders then searched the island for their dragons. They then found that their dragons had been cocooned in rock solid substance by a new dragon, the Death Song. Unfortunately, Astrid and the other riders were then cocooned in the substance. They, along with their dragons were rescued and freed by Hiccup and Earsplitter.
Astrid and the others then searched for an island to act as their outpost. After finding an island, Astrid then offered up her design for their outpost. She and the others then discovered a flock of Night Terrors. She then defended the flock from Changewings. She then helped reunite the alpha night terror, Smidvarg with his flock and allowed his flock to share their outpost.
Astrid and the other riders then returned to Berk to remove a Scauldron from the fishing lanes. At first they failed but were able to relocate it after Fishlegs/Bonecrusher falied attempted to tame the Scauldron.
After Astrid and the other riders were getting supplies, then went to a ship to investigate an attack by a rogue rider and their dragon. There, Astrid found a spike as sharp as Stormfly's. At the great hall, Astrid then had Stormfly light up the Dragon eye to find information on the Sharp-class dragon. Astrid and the other riders then went to an island with sea slugs. However, Astrid and Stormfly were then trapped in a cave by rogue rider's dragon, who turned out to be Heather. Astrid and the the other riders then assisted Heather in attacking Dagur and his fleet. However, they ended their attack when Dagur's reinforcements arrived and Heather realized that Dagur was her brother.
Astrid then look, along with the other riders how Hiccup test his flight suit and stops him after he fails multiple times. She then help training a Speed Stinger and fight against the other flightless dragons.
After Dagur attacks Berk and destroy her parents' house, Astrid decide to stay on Berk and prepare new Auxiliary riders. After she learned that the Edge needs her, she let the riders under the command of Gustav.
Astrid is first seen in the beginning of the film, where she participates in dragon racing with her friends on Berk, during which she emerges victorious. During the race, Hiccup's father, Stoick, happily refers to her as "my future daughter-in-law," which suggests either that the relationship between Astrid and Hiccup has progressed to the point where he sees them getting married or that Hiccup and Astrid are actually betrothed. After winning the race, she then almost immediately flies off to find Hiccup and Toothless, eventually catching up with them on an island in the remote areas of Berk (which Hiccup had labeled Itchy Armpit). Hiccup reveals to her that he has been avoiding his father who has pressured him to become Chief. The news of Hiccup becoming Chief makes Astrid overly excited, but Hiccup is unsure if he is ready to take on such a duty. As Hiccup begins to doubt himself, claiming he is not like his father and hasn't met his mother since he was a baby, Astrid comforts him and tells Hiccup what he is searching for is not out there, but inside himself. She then gives him a kiss on the cheek before they both see smoke coming from the distance. After discovering the destroyed fortress of Eret, Son of Eret, and hearing about the tyrannical Dragon God by the name of Drago Bludvist, they fly back to Berk to inform Stoick of what they have heard and witnessed. Stoick then orders the villagers to fortify and protect the island from a potential attack as Hiccup chases after him in a desperate attempt to reason with him, with Astrid following them. Astrid persuades Hiccup not to go back to Eret, only for Hiccup to give her a light kiss on her cheek before flying off on Toothless as the hangar doors are closing. Astrid flies off on Stormfly to catch up with Hiccup, barely managing to fly through the closing doors, seconds before they shut. They return to Eret to try to stop him from capturing dragons. Just then, Stoick and other dragon riders catch up to them, and Hiccup decides to go find Drago himself to try to reason with him. After he flies off on Toothless, Astrid mounts Stormfly as she prepares to follow him, but Stoick stops her, instead ordering her to lead the riders back to Berk before she can even take off.
Later, when Hiccup fails to show back up at Berk, Astrid thinks Hiccup was captured by Drago and his men, unaware that Hiccup is actually with his long-lost mother, so she kidnaps Eret so that he can show them the way to Drago. At first Eret declines, but Astrid drops him from a great height before getting Stormfly to catch him, scaring him into taking them to Drago. The group is captured shortly after arrival and sentenced to be executed. Eret then defects and assists Astrid in freeing Stormfly. After Astrid finds Hiccup, she is relieved and asks him where he has been. Hiccup then tells her about his mother Valka and she is surprised to see her still alive. Soon, Stoick is killed by Drago and his Bewilderbeast using a mind-controlled Toothless. Arriving at the scene of Hiccup and Valka crying over the dead body of Stoick, she rushes over to Hiccup and places her comforting arm on him tenderly while he is crying on Stoick's hand. Drago's Bewilderbeast then takes control of all the other dragons - including Stormfly - and heads for Berk with a much larger dragon army. Astrid and the others shoot flaming arrows onto Stoick's ship to give the chief a funeral. She then listens as Hiccup declares that he will continue his father's legacy and that they will go back to Berk, defeat Drago, and rescue Toothless and the other dragons. They fly back to Berk riding on baby Scuttleclaws, who are immune to the Bewilderbeast's control. During the final battle against Drago and his Bewilderbeast, Astrid cheers Hiccup on as he and Toothless face off against the evil Dragon God. After Hiccup and Toothless return the dragons back to their side and defeat Drago and his Bewilderbeast, Astrid is happily reunited with Stormfly and hugs her. She walks over to Hiccup, happy to see what he has finally found, reminding him that it was inside himself what he had been searching for, as she had told him earlier. She teasingly pokes his chest, causing the glide fin on his back to pop out, and they both laugh. Hiccup then pulls Astrid into another kiss, saying, "Come here, you." After the kiss, she celebrates as Hiccup is coronated the new Chief of Berk.
The Burning Midnight
In The Burning Midnight it is revealed that Astrid shares a meaningful conversation with Stoick right before she and Stormfly leaves to find Hiccup and Toothless on Itchy Armpit. The comic also sheds light on Astrid's relationship with Valka. Just like Stoick, Valka considers Astrid to be the daughter she always dreamed of having.
The Serpent's Heir
Astrid is petite for a Viking, but is given the advantage of agility because of this in Dragon Training. She has long, blonde hair wrapped in a braid down her back, bangs that initially cover the left side of her face, and a leather band across her forehead. In the first movie, Astrid wears a striped steel-blue sleeveless shirt, tan cloth bracers on her arms (each bit of cloth goes between her first and second finger) with arm wrappings above them, a red skirt with spikes surrounding it and another black skirt underneath the spiked one, and dark blue pants. She also wears a skull emblazoned belt with a pouch tied to it and shoulder pads. Her weapon of choice is a double-edged battle axe, which might previously have belonged to her mother.
In Dawn of the Dragon Racers and Race to the Edge, Astrid's shirt is blue and her red skirt has less spikes on it. She still wears the same shoulder guards, arm wrappings and pants--this time, with red leather knee pads. Her hair is still kept in a French braid but her bangs have been cut off in length, no longer covering half her face. Astrid has also stopped wearing kohl around her eyes.
In How to Train Your Dragon 2, Astrid's appearance is more elegant and feminine. She now wears a red sleeveless shirt with a dark spiked skirt that matches her boots. Her hair is more sun-bleached and neatly styled in a lengthy side-braid draped over her shoulder. Astrid also wears a fur hoodie, usually cloaked over her back and shoulders along with metallic shoulder pads and a matching silver skull-decorated belt. Her usual arm-wrappings are, however, replaced with large, thick bracers covered in fur. Astrid still carries an axe but it's considerably different in design than her previous ones. It's very likely Hiccup has made her a new axe.
Astrid's overall look throughout the franchise is heavily inspired by her dragon Stormfly. All of her skirts are covered in spikes similar in shape to Stormfly's spines. The tan spines also match Astrid's blonde hair and arm wraps. Stormfly's complexion is primarily blue with some specks of red, quite similar to the colors of Astrid's outfits.
- "You know exactly who you are."
Astrid is dutiful and immensely devoted to her cause. She used to be patriotic of the Viking way until dragons became an integral part of Berk. Competitive by nature and highly dedicated, Astrid works hard to achieve her goals. In How to Train Your Dragon, she pushed herself to become a better fighter. After bonding closely with Stormfly, Astrid’s focus shifted to becoming a masterful dragon rider. In the sequel, she is the champion of the Dragon Races.
Astrid is emotionally driven, and as a warrior, sworn to protect those she holds dear. In Team Astrid, she blamed herself for Dagur’s attack on Berk, despite being fully aware she couldn't have done anything to prevent it. Her guilt and responsibility toward her family probed her to take immediate actions. Similarly in Fright of Passage, Astrid’s innate pride and sense of duty drove her to face the Flightmare on her own, without any regard to herself. Even as an adult, Astrid is willing to go rouge and defy direct orders to ensure the safety of her loved ones.Though lessened with maturity, she can be prideful, short-tempered and somewhat of a perfectionist at times, especially true before the integration of dragons. Further exacerbated by her emotional personality, this can lead her to act impulsive and irrational. In the first movie, Astrid was solely focused on training and the war, often isolating herself and ignoring the other teens. When Hiccup began surpassing her, she grew visibly upset over his sudden improvements. Fueled by jealousy and suspicion, she started to follow him discreetly, eventually leading her to interrogate him in the cove.
Astrid grew more even and level-headed upon entering adulthood, though is still shown to be quite fiery under intense circumstances. On Race to the Edge, she exhibited vulnerability, gentleness and was much less prone to violence; preferring capture-missions over kill-missions. She had also become more openly talkative and closer to her fellow riders. Astrid still strives for perfection and could come across as condescending at times as pointed out by Ruffnut, but she is also able to own up to her mistakes, yet again demonstrating a never-ending will to improve herself. In the following episode, Astrid pulled a prank on the twins as payback for Loki’s Day, showing significant growth in her playful side.
She has also proven to be greatly reliable and is Hiccup's most loyal supporter. Her methods of encouragement varies but she rarely outright give him the answer to his problems. Instead, she boosts up his confidence and stands by him as he walks through the solution at his own pace. Her supportive nature also extends well beyond Hiccup. She has often shown compassion to the rest of her peers, and has especially let Heather confide in her on numerous occasions. Although her loyalties are steadfast, in Snow Way Out Astrid had to hold back information from Hiccup at Heather's request. She struggled deeply with guilt over it as she had never lied to him before.
By the time of How to Train Your Dragon 2, Astrid has adopted an optimistic and relaxed outlook on life. Although slightly cheeky and overconfident at times, she is more emotionally secure because of her steady relationship with Hiccup. Her sense of adventure and exploring is also apparent, but her ongoing competitiveness and rigid approach to grave situations remains. As an adult, she is generally more spirited and playful, and loves to goof around with Hiccup, Stormfly and Toothless.
Abilities, Skills, and Talents
- Strength and Fighting skills: She's an exceptionally skilled warrior which has been proven several times throughout both the film and the series. She has held her own against older more experienced fighters. She was also able to fight Dragon Hunters with only a broom. She's presumably the most accomplished fighter among the teens, if not along with Snotlout. Her weapon of choice is a double-sided axe and she is quite formidable with it. Despite her small form, she has also shown to have great strength to lift heavy objects and able to push a wild Monstrous Nightmare little bit. She can even easily grab Snotlout by the arm and swing him around several times and thrown him into a wall.
- Dragon Riding and Training: Next to Hiccup, she's the best Rider among the teens. She works very well with Stormfly and they're usually able to synchronize their moves accurately. On Outcast Island she was able to tame a wild Monstrous Nightmare, (although with a little more difficulty than Hiccup) and the Nightmare came to her rescue later, showing she was able to gain its loyalty. She was able to ride the tame Nightmare and also has ridden on Hookfang. When she had learned the dragon call of the Deadly Nadder, she was able to train them to fly in a perfect formation. When she temporarily became Hookfang's Rider, she figured out the hidden ability of 'Wing Blast'.
- Speed and Acrobatics: These are undoubtedly her top physical skills. She's able to perform a variety of acrobatic feats like handsprings, cartwheels and flips even while riding Stormfly. She was also able to swiftly dodge the attacks of a wild Deadly Nadder and the Flightmare.
- Intelligence: Even though most of the strategies and solutions to their problems are made mostly by Hiccup and Fishlegs provides most of the knowledge, she herself has proven to be valuable and capable in this department as well. She was the only one who wasn't fooled by Heather and was the one to come up with the idea to get the Book of Dragons back from Outcast Island. She has also always given useful advice to Hiccup enough and he always takes them to heart. When Hiccup was captured by the dragon hunters she lied to one of the hunters to get him to send a terror mail and they would follow it to find Hiccup.
- Actress: She dressed up as Heather to get into Outcasts Island as she manage to fool everyone there until Alvin the Treacherous figured it out when he realized her hair was colored from blond to black.
- Teaching Skills: She has shown to be harsh teacher on her students of the A Team as she wanted to make them experience Dragon Riding but she was forcing on their selves to fail purposely because she wanted to stay on Berk and not go back to the edge to protect her home from danger. She also taught Dagur and was shown to be pretty impressed at how he was able to be successful on the training and seeing the bond of his dragon.
- ""I can't imagine a world with out you in it." "
- ―Hiccup telling Astrid when she is sick with the Scourge of Odin in Buffalord Soldier.
At first, Astrid is shown to be disinterested in romance - due to her sole focus on improving her fighting skills. However, whilst the other Vikings actively ridicule Hiccup, Astrid seems more weary of him, only becoming angry with him due to his inability to focus in the Arena. Her dislike for him grows into jealously when he becomes more skilled at 'fighting' dragons than she is. Despite the initial problems in their relationship, Astrid later grows to where Hiccup becomes her main love interest as she kisses him twice (albeit after punching him on the arm both times). Beyond the romantic elements of their relationship, Astrid and Hiccup are the closest human friends that either has. In the Riders of Berk series they appear to have a budding relationship, but they are quite shy and awkward about it. Their romantic attachment is more suggested in their dynamic and interaction then outright stated. Whilst Astrid maintains more of her initial stern, authoritative demeanor with the other Vikings, she opens up more when alone with Hiccup, and apparently feels safe showing a considerably softer, more whimsical side of her personality to him. The two are incredibly close, with Astrid acting as Hiccup's confidant when he needs advice on personal problems, and often pair off from the others when needing to achieve something especially difficult.
Astrid's feelings for Hiccup usually manifest themselves as extreme devotion and protectiveness, as she is always the first to aid him in any situation and the last to leave him, which Hiccup reciprocates towards Astrid. It appears to be an unspoken assumption that Astrid will accompany Hiccup on his adventures, more so then the other Vikings, and will usually invite herself along regardless. On the rare occasions that they are separated by mitigating circumstances, she is shown to worry greatly about him and is always overjoyed to be reunited with him. Astrid is the first person that Hiccup seeks out before leaving the island because of the lightning, and when Hiccup tells Astrid that he is leaving with Toothless the first thing that she asks if he will come back. Despite his assurance that he will return when the villagers all realize that the lightning wasn't because of Toothless, Astrid appears sad and distraught. She had also hugged Hiccup in front of Gobber when he returned from rescuing Johann and she was also willing to wait outside in the cold while she was suffering from Eel Pox for Hiccup to come back and was very happy to see him returned. These actions suggest that her crush on him is getting harder to hide.
It is possible that Astrid had feelings for Hiccup before the events in the movie, due to her immediate change in behavior during the first flight. She might have just ignored this since Hiccup didn't meet the usual Viking standards. When Hiccup was thought to be dead after he defeated the Red Death, Astrid is the only Viking to be brought to tears, meaning she took it the hardest, besides Stoick. She did say that one thing she "always liked about Hiccup" is that he was a gracious loser, further supporting this theory. She is also in a sense Hiccup's moral guide, keeping him honest.
Astrid remains a close friend of Hiccup, as Astrid and Hiccup both advocate the idea to make up new holiday traditions to cheer the tribe up, and they discuss the prosthetic Hiccup makes for Toothless so the Night Fury can fly on his own. It's never officially confirmed if they've become a couple. Even so, Astrid comforts Hiccup when he's missing Toothless, and even kisses him on the lips and hugs him. She still likes to tease Hiccup however, as she did with him when she noticed Toothless had entered the Great Hall, before she giddily turned him around so he could see Toothless was back.
Despite there being no direct confirmation, in Race to the Edge, that Hiccup and Astrid are a couple their relationship is shown to be closer and stronger. There are several instances which point to the complex relationship that has develop between the two to this point and establishes a theme that carries through the entire series. When they first land on Dragon's Edge and Hiccup takes charge of having them set up the camp Snotlout complains about liking "whiney Berk Hiccup" more than "Princess outpost Hiccup" to which Astrid replies, "I know, right?" before giving Hiccup a secret double thumbs up. Then the next day when everyone is pushing their ideas for the outpost Astrid smiles when Hiccup states that they need one idea, as if she fully expects Hiccup to choose her design and then gets upset when Hiccup states that everyone else's ideas are good. However, what is perhaps the most telling is the layout that Hiccup chooses for Dragon's Edge. Hiccup placed his hut right next to Astrid's hut and they are closer together than any of the other huts.
Heather asks Astrid if she and Hiccup are a couple. First, Astrid panics and throws her axe into the top of a tree. Then she adamantly states the two are just friends, though appears a little nervous on the matter, and it is clear that Heather doesn't buy her denials. Also, when Heather states that Hiccup is kind of cute Astrid smiles and says, "I guess. If you like that unassuming, heroic, dragon rider type." Then at the end, Hiccup feels sorry for Astrid losing a friend, knowing the two got really close. Astrid then puts her arm around Hiccup and states, "But I still have you."
When Stormfly gets captured, leaving Astrid stranded in the water, she doesn't show up back to campsite after sunset, and a concerned Hiccup along with the rest of the dragon riders go out to look for her. Hiccup finds her just as she begins to lose consciousness and sinks into the ocean. He manages to save her, and frantically calls her name until she responds. A relieved Hiccup then embraces her, thanking Thor that she's alright. She passes out again, and he holds her close as they fly back to the Edge in the rain.
Astrid was very uncomfortable about keeping the secret about Heather from Hiccup, as she had never lied to him before. When he did find out, he was hurt that Astrid kept this information from him, but quickly forgives her.
When Astrid had the deadly illness called the Scourge of Odin, Hiccup is shown to care for her. He is the first to catch her when she faints and falls off of Stormfly, and holds her hand several times to comfort her. He even says, "I can't imagine a world without you in it." Later in the episode she said to him "I can't imagine a world without you in it either." This is the closest that they've come to saying that they love each other.
When Snotlout accidenly gets Hiccup and Toothless captured and taken to dragon fights, Astrid was very worried and when she found him she ran to him and embraced him. While they were flying out she said she was glad to have him back and admits that she was worried.
By the time of the sequel, Astrid and Hiccup are an official couple, boyfriend/girlfriend or possibly betrothed. She even teases him in an affectionate manner, and calls him babe when they are fighting Drago's army. They are comfortable sitting very close to each other, as opposed to in Animal House when they nervously moved away from each other. They are even so close that Astrid casually braids Hiccup's hair. Astrid also helps Hiccup in personal problems he can't figure out on his own. Also, she has displayed greater loyalty, trust and protectiveness towards Hiccup, just like Valka throughout the movie. They exchange two cheek kisses and a big kiss on the lips at the end.
- "Whoo-hoo! Haha! We're going vertical, Stormfly!"
Astrid first met her in the arena as a training dragon. She hit the Deadly Nadder with Hiccup's shield, but Stormfly still let Astrid ride her in the battle against the Red Death. Afterwards, Stormfly became Astrid's dragon. The two are very close and have similar personalities. Both are competitive, beautiful, and can be somewhat violent occasionally. Stormfly is not adverse to having other people ride her besides her Rider. Still, she's very loyal to Astrid, and is protective as well. Astrid seems to have lots of confidence in her dragon as she says that even though she's beautiful, she's still very tough. When Stormfly was captured by the Dragon Hunters, Astrid showed deep concern and fierce determination to get her dragon back.
In How to Train Your Dragon 2, they both continue to maintain a close, loving bond with each other.
Sneaky is a Terrible Terror that Astrid trained. She has a good friendship with Sneaky as she trained him for stealth.
- "All right, I admit it. This is pretty cool. It's... amazing. He's amazing."
- ―Astrid during romantic flight[src]
Astrid and Toothless are both hostile to each other during their first meeting, which ends with Astrid fleeing the scene. In an attempt to change Astrid's mind about dragons, Toothless reluctantly agrees to help Hiccup kidnap her. With their first encounter still afresh in mind, Toothless decides to take her for a spin as soon as she seats herself on top of him. It's only after she voices her apology to Hiccup, Toothless slows down and ascends into the skies, offering her a new perspective of the world. Overridden by joyous realization and taken aback by the beauty of it all, Astrid smiles for the first time in the movie. She then proceeds to tell Toothless he is amazing, making him smile back at her.
Toothless and Astrid bond over their mutual affection for Hiccup and greatly appreciate each other's presence in his life. In Gift of the Night Fury Astrid is ecstatic to see Toothless return and reunite with Hiccup. Similarly in How to Train Your Dragon 2, Toothless gives Astrid a big tongue-lolling smile when she arrives on Itchy Armpit. As he runs up to her, she gives him a loving scratch under his chin, showing they have developed a close and comfortable relationship. Astrid also makes a mention of riding Toothless for Hiccup once Hiccup becomes too busy with his Chiefly duties, implying she has flown Toothless before.
Astrid seems to honestly be repulsed by Snotlout the majority of the time. When Snotlout suggest that they build a big statue of himself as Thor and kisses his biceps Astrid makes a gagging motion and says that she just threw up in her mouth. Also, she appeared to find the thought of kissing Snotlout repulsive to use as a her losing a bet, she stated that she would "kiss Snotlout on the lips" if Hiccup's and Fishlegs' airmail worked. When the airmail system worked she quickly broke her word and threatened Hiccup when he teased her. And when Snotlout says that Hookfang must have picked up a few pointers from his master in regard to "the ladies", Astrid replies that she doubts it because the female Monstrous Nightmare isn't dry heaving. Every time Snotlout tries to get close to Astrid, she punishes him with something, such as when she threw a rock at him and flipping him for hitting on her. When Snotlout puts his arm on her shoulder she forcefully throws it off, and when he is later struck by lightning takes a sort of pleasure in his inability to speak properly, stating that he is "better than okay". She was paired up with Snotlout on patrol, and was annoyed with him constantly flirting with her.
Pushed over the edge, and her previously aggressive responses doing nothing to deter Snotlout, Astrid turns the tables on him by pretending that he has finally won her over. She then begins to flirt back in a saccharine manner, which quickly scares Snotlout into submission, much to Astrid's enjoyment.
In Race to Fireworm Island, Astrid shows a gentler side in the face of Snotlout's obvious worry about Hookfang, telling him that there is nothing wrong with caring and almost crying when Hookfang is supposedly mortally wounded by the Fireworm Queen. Also, in Total Nightmare, Astrid did show concern for Snotlout when he decided to go up against a Titan Monstrous Nightmare.
By How to Train Your Dragon 2, it is revealed that Snotlout has given up his pursuit of Astrid, since she has officially been in a relationship with Hiccup for some time by this point, and has transferred his affections to Ruffnut. It is known this improved their relationship.
- "Great having Heather back. She's so, I don't know, intense. Hardcore. I love it!"
Astrid at first believed Heather's story about being attacked by pirates like everyone else, but later sees her running off in the middle of the night. She then becomes very suspicious of her. She was also a little jealous that Hiccup had been spending time with her, and not their appointment to meet up. Astrid suspicions grow as Heather becomes more and more interested with the Book of Dragons. Hiccup isn't bothered by this, or when Astrid tells him about the other night. Heather says she couldn't sleep so she went for a walk. Later, Astrid catches Heather with Stormfly and warns her not to give her the "innocent routine." Heather simply replies that Astrid is too smart for that. She also pushes her buttons when it appears that Stormfly likes Heather. Astrid soon discovers that Heather is working with the Outcasts. She tries to warn Hiccup, but Heather beat her to Hiccup's room, where she pretends she was sleeping the whole time. The next day, while Hiccup is looking for the Book of Dragons, Astrid bursts opens the door telling him "little miss innocent" stole Stormfly. Finally putting two and two together, the teens go after Heather. When they catch up to her, Astrid jumps onto Stormfly's back from Toothless, and starts wrestling with Heather over the book. By the time they reach Outcast Island, Astrid accidentally knocks Heather off Stormfly, with the book. Snotlout catches her, but the Book of Dragons is now on Outcast Island. Heather is then locked up in the Berk prison while the teens try to figure out a plan to get the Book back.
In the next episode, Heather tries to tell Astrid she did what she did because Alvin had her parents, though she doesn't believe her. When Astrid disguises herself as Heather to get the Book of Dragons back, she learns Heather was telling the truth that Alvin really did have Heather's parents. Astrid then tries to save them but is found out by Alvin and is forced to show him where Hiccup and the others are. The teens and Outcasts begin to fight and the Riders are soon overpowered. Then to their surprise, Heather and Stormfly show up. Astrid apologizes for not believing her, but Heather says she wouldn't have believed herself either. The two girls the ride Stormfly and grab Heather's parents. Once they all return to Berk, with the Book, Heather thanks them for their help, especially Astrid. The two hug, as they have finally become friends. Astrid and Hiccup then wave goodbye to Heather as she and her family sail home.
When they met up three years later, after Heather trapped Astrid and Stormfly in a cave. While angry at first, she did say the "chicken move" brought back some memories. Astrid also enjoyed how much more of a fighter Heather had become, and was extremely impressed by her battle axe, wanting one for herself. The two even spent time together throwing axes, as well as having some "girl talk." When Heather wanted to go after Dagur again, Astrid was hesitant, hurting Heather's feelings. Not wanting her to go alone, Astrid convinces the other Dragon Riders to join Heather, as long as it remained a capture mission. Astrid and Heather snuck aboard Dagur's ship, quietly taking out his men. Before Heather could finish Dagur off, Hiccup arrived revealing Heather and Dagur were actually siblings. With this shocking news, Heather decided to leave Dragon's Edge. Astrid was saddened by this, and tried to convince her to stay.
When it had appeared Heather betrayed the Dragon Riders, Astrid was very angry with her, like how it was when they first met. However, Heather told Astrid that she was actually spying on the Dragon Hunters and agreed to keep her secret from the others. Astrid and Heather were able to work well together in convincing Ryker and Dagur that they were enemies when she and the other riders were captured the Dragon Hunters.
In her role as Astrid's contact, Heather supplied with information on the Dragon Hunters' targets and their leader, Viggo Grimborn. Astrid later admitted to the other Dragon Riders about their plan. By the time of Maces and Talons Part I, Astrid grew very concerned about Heather's role as a spy and wanted to pull her out. When Viggo figured out she was a spy, Astrid feared what the Hunters would do to Heather. She was very happy that Heather managed to escape and the two girls and Hiccup drove Flightmare away.
- "We're warriors, you and I."
It is unknown about the length of Astrid and Stoick's relationship, but Astrid was considered a daughter that Stoick and Valka had dreamed and wanted During the Dragon Races, Stoick yelled during the Dragon Races when Astrid won is that he is looking forward to his her becoming his daughter-in-law. The exact meaning of this isn't clear, it could be interpreted that he is simply looking forward to his son's girlfriend becoming something more, or it could literally mean what Stoick said that Astrid is going to be his future daughter-in-law, which would mean that Hiccup and Astrid are betrothed.
Astrid was greatly saddened when Stoick died in How to Train Your Dragon 2, and fired a flaming arrow onto Stoick's ship to honor her chieftain.
When Astrid was a small child, she wanted to get revenge on the Flightmare for turning her "fearless" uncle into a frozen one. However she was stopped by Gobber because she would need "more than that wee axe". Gobber is shown to be somewhat friendly with Astrid, regardless of the situation.
- "I can see why Hiccup is so fond of Berk and its Dragons... and you, Astrid!"
Astrid was surprised to learn Hiccup's mother was alive and looked positively awed when she saw her on top Cloudjumper taking control of all the dragons.
There was little interaction between Astrid and Valka in How to Train Your Dragon 2, but they appear to get along well in Dragons: Rise of Berk. They often train dragons together and give one another compliments. Valka is also openly supportive of Hiccup's relationship with Astrid and even offers them relationship advice.
After witnessing a quarrel between the young couple one morning, Valka voices her concerns to Gobber. She is worried Hiccup and Astrid will make the same mistakes as she did in her relationship with Stoick. She even attempts to talk to Hiccup and Astrid about it but they inform her they have already made amends since morning and are off to a picnic on Perilous Paradise island now. Valka quickly learns the young riders have good communication and don't hold grudges against each other for long, and decides then to never interfere again.
In Breakneck Bog, Astrid supported Hiccup's search for the long-lost gift from Valka and encouraged the other teens to help.
Astrid gets along well with Fishlegs and is able to cooperate with him whenever they are teamed up. There has never been shown any arguments between them except during the Terrible Terror training competition. Just like Hiccup, Astrid respects Fishlegs and stands up for him whenever Snotlout makes a jab at him. While Astrid may care for him as a friend, she has also made it clear he is definitely not her type. She seemed very surprised by Heather's attraction to him and was repulsed when he made advances on her as Thor Bonecrusher.
In Edge of Disaster Part I Ruffnut states that Astrid has no respect for Fishlegs (prior to that episode). However Astrid has not been shown to disrespect Fishlegs in any episode of Race To The Edge so far. It may be possible what Ruffnut said isn't true (Ruffnut can be a bully at times).
- Astrid: "Loki'd! Enjoy your new home, guys. I hear the neighbors are really quiet. Hahaha."
- Tuffnut: "Evil genius. You got to admire it."
- Ruffnut: "Admire it? I'm straight up jealous of it!"
- ―Loki'ing Ruff and Tuff in Shock and Awe
Astrid had almost no interaction with either Tuffnut or Ruffnut in the first movie but when Tuffnut commented on how Hiccup and Astrid looked like a couple, Ruffnut said, "She could do better", indicating she and Ruffnut may get along. Although she did pull Ruffnut away when she briefly flirted with Hiccup just prior to taming Hookfang. In the television series, she gets easily annoyed by their antics and does not trust their abilities either. While she considers both annoying, she seems to find Tuffnut slightly more annoying, as she will hit him when extremely annoyed with him, (as seen when she mercilessly hits him with a skeleton arm when she finds out he, Ruffnut and Snotout pranked them on Breakneck Bog), but she has not hit Ruffnut. She also does care for the twins, as she states "I'll almost miss them when they don't come back" when Hiccup sends them and the rest of the riders to separate parts of the island to find and remove old Dragon traps. It is also presumed in A View to a Skrill Part 2 that she went along with the rest of the riders who looked for the twins after they went missing until both she and her Dragon became too exhausted to look further and rested, indicating she does genuinely care for them.
In Edge of Disaster Part I Astrid is forced to work with Ruffnut and Tuffnut to create more defenses for Dragon's Edge. Astrid was not pleased by this and was further irritated by the twins' incompetence. Eventually, it got to a stage where Astrid lost her patience and began to berate them. Ruffnut, who was fed up with Astrid's constant criticism, began to scold Astrid for her mighty attitude and ended up mortifying her. With Tuffnut merely watching and not saying a word throughout the argument.
Tuffnut sought out Astrid again for her help after Ruffnut was taken by Ryker's men. Soon they found out Dragon's Edge was under siege. He and Astrid then agreed they needed to secure the edge first in order to save his sister. While Astrid wanted to go by the book to defend their turf, Tuffnut had more Loki'sh intentions in mind. After failing to agree on one plan, they ended up settling for each of them making their own preparation and meeting up again later to decide on which idea to use. Astrid ended up convincing Tuffnut to put her plan into action first, and they managed to sink two incoming ships. Once Astrid's plan ran its course she reluctantly agreed to try out some of Tuffnut's insane ideas. They were able to withhold the hunters long enough for Hiccup to arrive back at Dragon's Edge with a group of wild dragons ready to strike. Once reunited with Ruffnut again, Astrid apologized and made amends with her.
Tuffnut and Ruffnut pulled an ill-timed prank on Astrid midair. Tuffnut explained that Astrid's the "crown jewel" and a shot at Loki'ing her is always worth it. Astrid promised him payback. At the end of the episode, she attached the twins' hut to a rope connected to Stormfly and deserted it on an islet in the middle of the ocean. Tuff and Ruff concluded she is an evil genius.
- Astrid: "Careful what you wish for!"
- Eret: "What is this?"
- Astrid: "A kidnapping."
- ―Astrid and Eret, after Stormfly grabs Eret
Astrid's relationship with Eret is rocky at first, with Eret trapping Stormfly. Then when Hiccup faked surrendering to Eret, Astrid was concerned. However, Astrid got much more time to get to know Eret than Hiccup did, as she managed to capture him quite early on in the film. When Eret double-crosses them and gives them away to Drago, Astrid is visibly and understandably upset, and feels betrayed. However, he does eventually save Stormfly, help to bring down Drago, and joins the Dragon Riders' ranks.
She first meets Hookfang at the Kill Ring where she tried to protect Hiccup by throwing a hammer at his face. Like the other riders, Astrid would have thought that Hookfang was a wild and aggressive dragon. Later though, she is shown to bond with him when she switches dragons with Snotlout. Astrid was also very concerned when Hookfang was dying in Race to Fireworm Island, but was relieved with joy when the Fireworm Queen restored his flames. Though Hookfang did try to show some affection to Astrid, she wasn't to happy about it. She was however, impressed with how powerful Hookfang was and also finding the hidden ability of his with Wing Blast.
Astrid, like the other riders, saw Gustav as a tiny Snotlout when he became dragon rider in training. By the time Gustav was 16, Astrid was as annoyed with his attraction to her just like Snotlout when he fantasized about she and him.
- "He's only the son of Stoick the Vast, his heir to the throne of Berk, and the greatest dragon master this world has ever seen! And unless you let us go, right now, he will blast through here on his Night Fury and blow your entire fleet of ships to splinters."
- ―Astrid bragging about Hiccup to Drago[src]
- "Like I said, the book can only get you so far, Alvin."
- ―Astrid trying to trick Alvin into giving her the book of dragons[src]
Astrid dislikes Alvin because he often targeted her to get to Hiccup.
- "Nice try, Astrid! Your puny little Nadder spines are useless from up there."
- ―Dagur being led into a trap by Astrid[src]
Astrid hated Dagur. In the third season of Race to the Edge, when Dagur tries to improve himself and really tries to change, she doubts him and believes he is sent by Viggo but when she trains with him, she begins to believe him of changing, though she still warns him of not betraying her friends. She even tries to convince Heather that he has changed stating she thought he was a spy at first too. It is hinted she was saddened on his death.
During a morning flight with Stormfly, Astrid came across a group of dragon hunters and their leader Ryker Grimborn. She quickly knows that he is a cruel person and decides to learn more about the new enemy. Despite Astrid's efforts to stay hidden from Ryker's sight, he was able to detect Stormfly by smell. Astrid attempted an escape but it was to no prevail. Stormfly quickly lost her balance after being hit by one the hunters' arrows, throwing her rider off her saddle and into the ocean. Ryker and his men then dragged Stormfly with them onto their ship and took off. Astrid could only watch in horror as she was left behind floating in the sea. When she is rescued by Hiccup and brought to the Edge, she expresses her rage and anger towards him.
- "We're kindred spirits, you and I."
- ―Hroar to Astrid in The Stowaway.[[The Stowaway|[src]]]
Hroar is a character from the DreamWorks Dragons Comics (Titan Comics). He first appears in the 4th volume of the series called The Stowaway. The newcomer initially introduces himself as a stowaway from Knaff, and during his stay on Berk, he spends a good deal of his time with Astrid, even referring to her as his kindred spirit. Astrid's interest in Hroar quickly dissipates once she discovers he has ulterior motives and is working for The Outcast Tribe.
Although short-lived, Hroar is the first character Astrid has shown attraction to aside from Hiccup.
Astrid's parents have not been seen in the movies or in the television series, but she does mention them in the games. Astrid parents were first mentioned in the TV series in "Team Astrid".
In the episode When Lightning Strikes, Astrid says she had an aunt who was cursed by Odin. She had to pay tribute to him by sailing to the end of the Earth, but kept showing up from the opposite direction because "she couldn't find it". Astrid's grandfather was mentioned in Breakneck Bog. He told her the reasons behind the mysterious disappearances were pirates. Astrid also has an uncle named Finn, known as Fearless Finn Hofferson. In Fright of Passage, he was frozen by the Flightmare, bringing shame to the Hofferson family. He possibly passed away sometime between facing the Dragon and its return ten years later. Astrid had a lot of respect for her uncle and trained very hard to avenge him in order to restore her family's honor. In the Race to the Edge episode "Team Astrid", she blames herself for the the attack on Berk stating that she wanted to protect her family at all times. She was willing to stay behind on Berk for them meaning she loves and cares for them greatly.
- Astrid's name means "Divine Beauty" in Old Norse which fits into her description.
- Astrid is the first teen who has a real life name. The second being Heather.
- Astrid is the only teen who hasn't been seen wearing a Viking helmet. However, she did wear one as a child.
- Astrid is right-handed.
- Compared to the second movie, Astrid wears eyeliner in the first film all the way to the series. If you lay pictures out of the two movies side by side, you could easily see that she does, in fact, wear eyeliner in the first film.
- She is the Academy's Sharp Class Dragons expert despite the fact that her favorite species, the Deadly Nadder is now a member of the Tracker Class.
- She seems to create very difficult Flight Club training missions, such as "Hand-to-Claw Combat" and "Spine-Dodging."
- She is Hiccup's second-in-command in the Berk Dragon Training Academy and Dragon Flight Club.
- Snotlout throws cod at Astrid and retorts "What's wrong Astrid, I thought you like cod?", implying she likes cod.
- Astrid sees hitting people as her way of "communicating".
- In a deleted scene from the first film, Astrid says her axe belonged to her mother.
- Astrid has only been seen without her shoulder pads in How to Start a Dragon Academy, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes and Buffalord Soldier.
- America Ferrera refers to Astrid as being Hiccup's "Number one defender and champion" by the time of the second film.
- Although Astrid's parents have never made an official on-screen appearance, they were definitely included in the earlier drafts of the final script. In a deleted scene from the DVD, Astrid is seen bidding farewell to her father in the background before he embarks on a journey with Stoick. In another deleted scene, Astrid visits Hiccup in the forge to have her mother's axe sharpened.

- [To Snotlout] "Sweet baby Thor in a thunderstorm, GO!"
- "You might wanna take notes."
- "You do realize there are, like, a bazillion dragons out there, and only one of you?"
- "I got used to Stormfly's face being the first thing I see every morning."
- "It's not supposed to be fun. It's a 'Hiccup' idea."
- "Hello, sir! Uh-- ma-- ma'am."
- (Towards the twins and Snotlout) "Okay I've got one for you, what happens when you fire upon the owner of a Deadly Nadder."
- "It's okay, Stormfly. I'm a soldier. I've been shot at before."
- "That's the sound of our dragons getting better."
- "The only thing under siege is your brain! You're not thinking clearly!"
- "You know what I always liked about you, Hiccup? You were always a gracious loser. Who knew you'd be such a lousy winner?"
- "No Hiccup. No one was a better Viking than you, today." [she kisses him]
- "He has you. And he looks pretty happy if you ask me."
- "What were you thinking?! If that was Toothless, you could have killed him!"
- "Looks like they've taken their training to a whole new level."
Dragons: Defenders Of Berk
- "So, I guess this is the part where I ask if your father changed his mind, and you tell me he didn't, and you're going behind his back... again?"
- "We both know what the right thing is, Hiccup. But if we're gonna ride dragons behind your father's back, we ALL need to ride dragons behind your father's back."
- "So, what do you want to do now?"
- "We talked about you thinking, Snotlout. It's not good. For anyone."
- "You're gonna charge people for water? That's the dumbest idea I've ever heard."
- "Whoops! Hate it when it happens."
- "You might as well give up now!"
- "Hiccup, you're so predictable."
- "What do you think I'm doing? Defending Berk! And my family honor! We'll see who's a coward!"
- Leave Berk now, and never come back! Here I am, ungodly beast - Fearless Astrid Hofferson! Come and get me, if you dare!"
- "Please. If that happens, I'll kiss Snotlout on the lips."
- "Say it, and those will be the last words you ever speak."
- "'Chomp, chomp, 'there goes your island' big!"
- "No one is kissing me on the lips, ever!"
- "Is it wrong to root for the trap?"
- "Be careful. The lightning is attracted to metal, and you two are wearing a lot more metal than the rest of us."
- "I'm gonna take your helmet and shove it up your dirty, little, rotten--"
- "One out of two ain't bad. And for what it's worth, I always knew red was your color."
- "That sheep is invincible."
- "Okay, guys, you heard the Acting Chief. No dragon racing."
- "All I'm saying is Stoick isn't going to be back for a few days. And, isn't this a great way to blow off steam too?"
- "My arm! I can't believe you!"
Dragons: Race to the Edge
- "What if there isn't, Hiccup, what if we're done? What if the search is over?"
- "Well, it's over for me. I've been trying to tell you. Stormfly and I... we're joining the Berk Guard."
- "Look, maybe you should give some thought on what's next for you and Toothless."
- "I know right. We made it Hiccup. We made it."
- "You were right Hiccup. There's so much more out here. And it's... beautiful."
- "Uh, how far do you think he's gonna get before he realizes?"
- "Is it me, or did Snotlout just fall in love with Fishlegs?"
- "And I have to admit, the chicken move, that brought back some memories."
- "She had a point. We're a pretty stubborn group."
- "I guess. If you like that unassuming, heroic, dragon rider type."
- "You'll be safe here. You'll have support, and... I'm here."
- "But I still have you."
- "Ugh, boys..."
- "If you say Dragonfly 2, I'm locking you up."
- "Their house... the house I grew up in, is gone."
- "How to I make this feeling go away?"
- "Element of surprise, key to any battle. Now land and give me 20."
- "What took you so long?"
- "Hiccup, I don't know what I'd do without Stormfly."
- "How do you not get that having an axe is a huge advantage in a fight?"
- "I told you, you were messing with the wrong viking!"
- "Tuff, you're not hideous! Terrifying at times, yes."
- "Jorgensons have always irritated Hoffersons."
- "Something's wrong. If Toothless is here, and Hiccup's not..."
- "We should tell Hiccup what we're doing. This doesn't feel right."
- "I've never lied to him before!"
- I really hope you're right, because if any of the Riders got hurt, or you got hurt because I held something back.."
- "Hiccup, no! Heather's with us!"
- "This actually may be the worst day in history."
- "Hiccup, where are you when I need you?"
- "Ugh! This is all my fault."
- "Say; Okay, Astrid."
- "Now, there is no possible way we can defend the Edge against an all-out assault with only one flyable dragon. But maybe, we can slow them down until help gets here if we use our spears and arrows sparingly."
- "This is gonna be a rough day, Stormfly. Whatever we have to face, I'm glad we're facing it together."
- [Imitates Hiccup] "I mean, who hunts dragons anyway?"
- "Loki'd! Enjoy your new home, guys. I hear the neighbors are really quiet. Hahaha!"
- "Everything you did, you did to protect that dragon and to protect all of us. Now, the question isn't how you fix it, it's how we all fix it. As a team."
- "Don't say it. Please, just don't say it."
- "I can't imagine a world without you in it either."
How to Train Your Dragon 2
- "What are you doing, Snotlout?! They're gonna win now!"
- "Ruffnut? Didn't she try to bury you alive?"
- "The Black Sheep! Come on, Stormfly! We can still win this thing!"
- [Imitates Hiccup] "Not now, Dad. I've got a whole day of goofing off to get started."
- [Imitates Hiccup talking to his dad] "Aw, thanks, Dad! I'm pretty impressed with myself too!"
- [Cuts Hiccup off; excited] "To make you Chief! Oh, my gods! Hiccup, that's AMAZING!" [Punches him hard in the chest]
- "What you're searching for isn't out there, Hiccup. It's in here." [Puts her hand to Hiccup's chest]
- "Careful what you wish for!"
- "You're gonna show us the way to Drago."
- "Stormfly, drop him! Good girl!"
- "Stormfly, fetch!"
- "Works every time."
- "Never take a toy from a dragon. Don't you know anything?" [As Stormfly is sitting on him]
- "Are you kidding me?"
- "He's only the son of Stoick the Vast, his heir to the throne of Berk, and the greatest Dragon Master this world has ever seen!"
- "You are a steaming heap of dragon—" (Eret:"Duck!")
- "That's your mother?!"
- "Take 'em down, babe!"
- [Comes to Hiccup] "See? I told you that it was in here."
