Corn is a vegetable mentioned briefly in Book 4 of the How to Train Your Dragon Book series, How to Cheat a Dragon's Curse.

Description[]

Corn (Zea mays) is also commonly called maize, depending on the country. Corn is a cereal crop - a type of grass - that has been cultivated in the Americas for several millenia. Originally corn plants were much smaller and had smaller seed-bearing parts - called 'ears' - but selective breeding have produced a huge variety of taller plants with larger ears. Seeds, called 'kernels', are typically a yellow color, but can range from white to reds, purples, oranges, and even green, sometimes all on one ear.

Function[]

In both the Book series and real life, corn is used as a food item for humans. In the Books, dragons can also eat corn. It is a staple crop in the Americas. Corn can also be used to create ethanol which has been used as an automobile fuel.

Appearances[]

How to Cheat a Dragon's Curse[]

Corn dishes are mentioned as part of the Freya'sday Eve feast in the Hysteric Tribe Great Hall. Toothless gorges on the food, ignoring Hiccup's frustrated orders to focus on getting him out of a cage rather than eating.

Toothless pretended to be quite deaf, and took his time hopping from plate to plate, gorging himself on deep-fried mackerel, turkey wings, and sweetcorn fritters.
