The Cuckoo Dragon is a dragon that lays a single egg in the nest of a bird. However, instead of taking over the bird's nest and raising its young, it leaves it up to the bird that owns the nest to raise the infant dragon. The bird takes in the baby dragon as if it were its own. When the dragon finally hatches, the bird still continues to take care of it, despite the dragon being much larger and stronger than the bird. Depending on the dragon's metabolism, it may or may not eat its foster bird parent when it finally leaves the nest.
The Cuckoo Dragon first appears in A Hero's Guide to Deadly Dragons, and while it does not feature in the story, it is one of the dragon profiles at the back of the book. Cuckoo dragons are named because the most common bird nest they will lay their eggs in is a cuckoo birds nest. (To the readers from our world, this is a bit of an in-joke, since cuckoos are famous for laying their eggs in other bird's nests themselves. While many cuckoo species do this, the majority build nests of their own and raise their own chicks there.)
