How to Train Your Dragon Wiki

Various types of Dragon Hunter Weapons are seen throughout all the seasons of Dragons: Race to the Edge.

Description[]

Simular to the Outcast and Hairy Hooligan Tribe, the Dragon Hunters utilize a variety of weaponry - crossbows, catapults, axes, and swords throughout the TV series. The Dragon Flyers and later Johann started to use these same weapons.

List of Weapons[]

Dragon Root Arrows[]

These arrows are dipped with high concentrations of Dragon Root, enough to render large dragons unconscious. The Dragon Root lanced arrows does not work on Gronckles, thus these arrows do nothing other than prick Gronckles. These arrows are also unable to pierce through the scales of the Screaming Death or Gronckle Iron. They were often fired from the traditional bow-and-arrow device.

Crossbows[]

The Dragon Hunters usually use large crossbows to fire arrows including those laced with Dragon Root. The crossbows can either be used by humans manually or can be attached to a mechanism such as a ship.

Ballistae[]

BetweenARockAndAHardPlace-BolaLauncher

After many failed attempts to overpower the Dragon Riders, the Dragon Hunters started to equip many of their ships, outposts and important locations with ballistae. They were relatively effective against Dragon Rider attacks, slowing them in the process because they can fire multiple arrows rapidly at dragons. They also had ballistas made of Deadly Nadder spikes that look similar to Astrid's Ballista.

The Dragon Hunters also fielded an armored variant, as seen in "No Bark, All Bite". It allowed them to cause more havoc and sustain fire from Dragons. The ballista was only armored from the front with dragon proof metal. Some of the ballistae looks similar to Hiccup’s first invention The Mangler.

Dragon Cages[]

These dragon cages are made of dragon fire proof metal, and left undamaged by even a Night Fury's plasma blast. In "Last Auction Heroes", according to Ryker, Hotburples are the only species that can bite through a dragon proof cage.

Nets[]

Nets are usually shot into the water to retrieve downed dragons before being pulled up. Nets can also be used on dry land to restrict dragons' movements before seizing them. It is shown in “A Time to Skrill” that the nets can be launch through the catapults

Catapults[]

BetweenARockAndAHardPlace-ViggosBase2

Gigantic catapults are used to launch rocks at dragons from a distance to knock them out. Sometimes, the boulders are set on fire. The Riders have found a solution to this by getting Meatlug to eat the flaming boulders in battle.

Grappling Chains[]

Chains made out of dragon proof metal are fired at downed dragons from a distance. They are strong enough to withstand the strength of dragons. They have grappling hooks and when fired, they coil around the dragon. The chain and the winch are also made of dragon fire proof metals.

Hammers[]

The hunters had giant hammers to ensure obedience from a pair of Quakens, as shown in "Between a Rock and a Hard Place". The hunters also used the same hammers to force a Shellfire to fire it's plasma-boulders, as shown in "Shell Shocked, Part 2".

Spears[]

Originally the Dragon Hunters used ordinary spears that was a special a type, as it appears to have a blade split into two parts at the end. They made their spears out of Deadly Nadder spikes. As seen in "King of Dragons, Part 2", the Dragon Hunters use spears with their top covered in Dragon Root for larger dragons, such as the Bewilderbeast.

Swords[]

The Dragon Hunters had swords made out of Gronckle Iron. Ryker and Viggo wore their signature swords on their backs. Ryker's swords are made of the same material the Dragon Hunters uses to cage dragons, while Viggo's normal sword was made from unknown material. Krogan later used one of the Dragon Hunters swords after he lost his axe in a sky battle with Hiccup.

Axes[]

From their first episode, Dragon Hunters have had axes made out of a material that looks to be the same as the dragon-proof cages. They use these axes in combat the same way other Vikings do. Some of the axes were made of Gronckle Iron as Fishlegs felt them when inspecting the weapons.

Daggers[]

The Dragon Hunters also have plain small daggers with no special adornment. They are short and sharp and can be mistaken for knives. One was almost used by Ryker who had one in his boot and attempted to use it in "Midnight Scrum". Viggo also has several daggers but they look longer and look more like short swords.

Mace-Axe-Sword[]

A Mace-Axe-Sword is displayed on the wall of the wrecked Dragon Hunter ship, The Reaper. This suggests the Dragon Hunters may have made use of this weapon for dragon hunting, or it is possible it was a trophy from a fight with an opposing tribe. It is likely that the Mace-Axe-Sword isn't used for fighting but more for display because the weapon would be ridiculously large and heavy to wield in battle.
