Paramount Pictures Corporation was the distributor of the film How to Train Your Dragon when it was released.
History[]
Paramount Pictures began in 1912 as Famous Players Film Company, just a month shy of the founding of Universal Pictures. The Hungarian immigrant, Adolph Zukor, observed that working immigrants and the middle class has an appetite for moving pictures and began producing feature-length features, with the first released the following year.
Paramount's namesake came from a 1914 corporation called Paramount Pictures Corporation, which was able to distribute Famous Players Film Company features country-wide. In 1916 Adolph Zukor merged the Famous Players Film Company, Paramount Pictures Corporation, and also Lasky Feature Play Company into Famous Players-Lasky Corporation. In 1926 the company changed names to Paramount Famous Lasky Corporation, and then to Paramount Publix Corporation in 1929.
Paramount expanded greatly in the 1920's, but nearly went out of business during the Great Depression of the 1930's. Adolph Zukor was able to salvage the company, which emerged as Paramount Pictures, Inc. Paramount continued to grow during the 1940's, to the point where the US Supreme Court ordered the company to be divided up due to monopolizing the market. Paramount became Paramount Pictures Corporation and United Paramount Theaters in 1949.
Paramount declined again in the 1950's and had to jettison its contract star actors and various divisions, even their foray into television. In 1966 Paramount was sold to Gulf + Western Industries Corporation. The company then started seeing increasing success and ventured into television again.
In 1989, Gulf + Western Industries Corporation became Paramount Communications, and sold the former company's non-media holdings. Paramount also purchased theme parks such as Kings Dominion in the 1980's. Paramount Communications Inc. was sold to Viacom in 1994.
In 2005, Paramount Motion Pictures Group bought Dreamworks SKG, but in 2008 they split from Paramount and formed the independent Dreamworks Animation. However, they retained a distribution contract until 2012. In 2014, Dreamworks purchased Paramount's distribution rights to its pre-2013 film library.
