How to Train Your Dragon Wiki

Scribbler and Patch, I'd like you to meet Gobber. He's my mentor and like a second father to me. [src]
  — Hiccup

Hiccup and Gobber's Relationship is different from other mentor/student relationships, as Gobber is like a second father or uncle for Hiccup. Even though Hiccup regularly thinks he knows everything about a situation, Gobber frequently teaches him something new.

How to Train Your Dragon[]

Shown in the first movie, Gobber was more of a second parent/father to Hiccup. Whenever his father wasn't around, Gobber would take his place and care for the child, no matter how much Hiccup couldn't fit in with the other Vikings his age. Hiccup stated that he has been Gobber's apprentice since he was little, so we assume that Gobber and Hiccup formed a really strong relationship over all those years. In many parts of the film, Gobber's duties as a teacher override his father-like relationship with Hiccup, causing him to criticize and humiliate Hiccup multiple times in front of the class with his scathing remarks and brutally candid comments in order to help Hiccup improve. Despite this, Gobber is also quick to defend Hiccup when the others begin to pick on him, albeit in a somewhat demoralizing manner. Gobber even made Hiccup a new tail fin for Toothless after the first one that Hiccup made had burned down, and as stated by Hiccup, it was thanks to Gobber that he knows what he knows now, especially about creating inventions, being his apprentice all his life. Even so, Gobber often gets frustrated with Hiccup's apparent inability to fight dragons, and his incompetence in the arena, as the latter is obviously eager to encourage him: believing that Hiccup has it in him to become a great dragon trainer through and through.

Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon[]

A lot of improvements on both Hiccup and Gobber were shown in this short film. Hiccup is shown to care for him the most; it is even Hiccup who decided to go with Gobber to find the legendary Boneknapper, even though Hiccup didn't believe Gobber's strange tales about the dragon. Their relationship is proved to be far more like relatives in this short than previously known.

After the end of the war with dragons, Gobber finds himself at a loss of what to do, in "Viking for Hire". Until now, his chief purpose was to forge weapons for the villagers, which were primarily used against dragons. Gobber tries to repurpose the weapons to no avail. Hiccup feels bad, indirectly being the cause of Gobber's lost sense of purpose. In the episode, he tries many tactics to make the Blacksmith feel needed. Although Hiccup failed, his quest was ultimately fulfilled, as Hookfang's bad tooth led Gobber to find a task he delighted in as being the village's first dragon dentist.

Gobber, as he frequently does, offers advice to Hiccup about his father when they are at odds again in "How to Pick Your Dragon". Hiccup feels Stoick does not listen to him, and Gobber explains that it's a father's job not to listen to his son. Rather he pretends not to hear.

Season 3[]

During the episode "Last Auction Heroes", Gobber acquires Grump the Hotburple as his dragon, whilst helping the others on a mission. In a fight against Viggo and Ryker, Hiccup and Gobber fight alongside each other. Although Hiccup has now progressed into a confident leader of the Dragon Riders, it is clear he still thinks to obey Gobber naturally, as he obeys Gobber's commands without question. Despite this, Gobber clearly recognizes Hiccup's field of expertise, and treats him more as an equal in the battle field than a young pupil.

How to Train Your Dragon 2[]

The relationship between Hiccup and Gobber differs little from the first movie. Gobber is like a friend and father or uncle to Hiccup, especially when Stoick dies. Hiccup is comfortable being around him and Gobber treats Hiccup like his son as well. Gobber also trusts Hiccup and his skills as being a leader. Like everybody else, he didn't hesitate to follow Hiccup's commands when he said that "they were going back" to avenge Stoick and claim Berk again from Drago Bludvist and his alpha.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World[]

In this film, Gobber becomes somewhat more like a kindly uncle to Hiccup, pushing him towards marrying Astrid, declaring bluntly in public that: "You two have to get married!" Gobber seems to see himself in a father-like role over Hiccup in these duties, and is apparently keen to push the marriage forwards. Other than this, Hiccup and Gobber's relationship remains much as it was during film two. Another difference however, does arise in question to Hiccup's authority. There is now a notable difference between Gobber's treatment of Hiccup as a trying child who is unable to fight dragons in How to Train Your Dragon 1, and his comradely, soldier-and-captain like respect for him during the course of The Hidden World.

How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming[]

DreamWorks Dragons: Dawn of New Riders[]

In this game, Hiccup introduces Gobber to the main character, Scribbler.

Though the two have a paternal type relationship, Gobber does get annoyed with his student from time to time. He finds that Hiccup flies off too often when he should stay on Berk managing his chiefdom.

You know Gobber made this [prosthetic] for me? He taught me everything I needed to know to make your tail. I've gotta find some way to help him.
