How to Train Your Dragon Wiki

The Moldruffle is a medium-sized Stoker Class dragon that first appeared in School of Dragons. This School of Dragons original species later appeared in Dragons: Rise of Berk as an individual dragon named "Moldruffle", which was identified as a Common Rockstomper, a Tracker Class dragon.

Official Description[]

Rockstompers have a tradition of burying hidden caches of supplies under the sand, including the belongings of Vikings, much to their riders' dismay.
There's no hiding from this Dragon! Rockstompers can track down anything, including their enemies in the heat of the battle.
  — Rockstomper description in Dragons: Rise of Berk
This Rockstomper's tracking skills came in handy when Snotlout and Hookfang landed on its island. Moldruffle found them fresh water deep underground by using its horns as a divining rod.

Physical Appearance[]

Egg[]

Moldruffle Egg

The Moldruffle's egg resembles an ordinary avian egg. It has a number of wave-like ridges running around its perimeter, giving it the appearance of decoratively carved wood. The color of the egg is a good indicator of the hatchling's color.

Hatchling to Adult[]

The Moldruffle looks a lot like the Snafflefang in appearance and build. It has a relatively wide and flat head, adorned with a crown of long, curved horns. It has a bipedal stature, with two muscular hind legs and two shorter, stubby forelegs, each with three claws. Its tail ends in a wide paddle-like fin, lined with a row of thin spikes, similar to the Shovelhelm. Unlike most dragons, the digits of its wings each end in long, hooked talons. Their wings and tailfins are decorated with rows of wave-like patterns.

The Rockstomper in Dragons: Rise of Berk resembles the original design, but is purple with lilac spots.

Titan Wing[]

Titan Wing Moldruffle

Titan Wing Moldruffles are mostly red, with blue patterns on their spine and tail. Their wings are primarily blue with mauve stripes. The spikes on their crown and back became longer and sharper.

Abilities[]

Hunting[]

The Moldruffle is an excellent hunter, and it has a sharp, long-range vision to help spot its prey. They are highly intelligent and have a naturally cat-like behavior, often described as being 'wonderfully curious'. They are quick and precise, and they can glide through strong winds in flight.

Speed and Stamina[]

These dragons have an aerodynamic build, making them quick and extremely agile hunters. They also have a lot of stamina and are known to travel great distances.

Horns and Talons[]

The Moldruffle also has quite an unusual way of communicating with other dragons of its kind. Their horns resonate with a pure sound when struck against objects, and this can be used to send a message to its dragonkin. Its horns and clawed wings can also be used as deadly weapons.

According to Moldruffle's description in Dragons: Rise of Berk, its two main horns can also be used for divining rods to find water underground.

The Moldruffle's headbutt attack in School of Dragons: Dragon Tactics poisons the target, suggesting that their nose horn may contain some sort of venom.

Firepower[]

The Moldruffle's signature ability is when they gather fire on the edges of their wings and tails, using their fan-like tail to strengthen the blazing flames.

The Moldruffle can also fire a massive, potent fireball that is renowned for its incredible strength.

Tracking[]

As a Tracker Class species in Dragons: Rise of Berk, these dragons, are said to have exceptional tracking abilities, including the ability to track enemies.

Weaknesses[]

Distraction[]

The Moldruffle's incredibly catlike nature means that its keen senses are quickly distracted, switching its focus from one thing to another.

Behavior and Personality[]

The Moldruffle is extremely curious, intelligent, and catlike in nature. Its keen senses, though, are quickly diverted, shifting its attention from one thing to another. In addition to these cat-like qualities, they are also stealthy and cunning, as demonstrated by Dirt-Hurler's battle strategy and Jewelbilant's sneaking around of shiny objects. They are also excellent trackers, not only of scent but also of visual cues such as animal tracks, at which Turfraider excels. Moldruffles are also said to have a quick and fiery temper.

Moldruffles may consume a variety of foods. Despite being primarily hunters, they do not appear to have a problem eating Glowing Algae or other food that has been contaminated with it, as demonstrated by Greenkeep.

Appearances[]

Games[]

Dragons: Rise of Berk[]

Following its debut in School of Dragons, the Moldruffle appeared in the game as an exclusive individual, while the species was named the "Rockstomper". However, Dragons: Rise of Berk classified the Rockstomper as a Tracker Class dragon. The Exotic Moldruffle, Greenkeep, Dirt-Hurle, Jewelbilant, and Turfraider were later added to the game, as well.

School of Dragons[]

The Moldruffle is an original species of School of Dragons and is classified as a Stoker Class dragon.

Aside from being a purchasable dragon, other Moldruffles appear at the explorable location of The Tempest in the expansion "Rise of Stormheart". They, along with a Titan Wing Gronckle, do not have a known purpose as yet but appear to be generating the energy to steam-power the ship.

Dragons: Titan Uprising[]

Rockstompers are briefly mentioned in the description of the Brush Nadder.

Brush Nadders are abundant in the Berk Forests, almost as common as Rockstompers.
